Alternative to triple antibiotic ointment for use near eyes

As the title says. :slightly_smiling_face: What product do you reach for when you feel better putting a topical on a cut or scrape, but said topical would be too close to the eye for triple antibiotic?

I have Silver Honey in the house but I wondered what others kept on hand.

Good question! I have multiple tubes of leftover antibiotic eye ointment from a Peke with many eye issues that I would use first, but if I didn’t have that, I think I would probably just flush it with pure saline solution a few times a day for the first day or two and just watch for signs of infection from there.

I just had this discussion with my vet and she said it was okay to use plain triple antibiotic ointment near (as opposed to “in”) the eye. My horse’s wound was about half an inch in front of the corner of his eye.

@Huntin_Pony It is, unless your animal is guaranteed to rub their eyes and smear it in.

The whole situation is making me realize that my at-home first aid kit for the house pets- which relies on triple antibiotic and chlorhexidine for treating and washing, respectively- has a small hole in it! Much like my dog’s face. (She’s fine. She made a poor choice and experienced a consequence. I hope she learned something, but I have my doubts.)

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. The vet said if it got in his eye it would do no harm. I asked exactly the question that OP asked.

Maybe species matters? I was talking to my horse vet, not small animal.

That’s interesting! I have gotten different guidance from my horse and dog vet.

If it is really close, you can get antibiotic eye ointment. Sterile and formulated not to irritate the eye. I believe they make Neosporin Ophthalmic ointment (and generic equivalents).
