Am I right? Saudi Arabia is leading in SJ?

Sorry, I can’t quite get how the show jumping is done. Saudi Arabia is on track to win the show jumping? ISn’t this kind of unusual, or am I missing something?

So, today they did a second round, right? And tomorrow, everyone does the same thing again, and then they add it all up and that decides team medals?

I’d appreciate someone who hs a clue (not me) explaining how it works.

It’s all explained on the Olympic website.

Competition format
There are a total of five rounds in the Jumping competition, with all five playing a part in the Individual event. Two of these rounds are used to determine the placings in the Team event.

First round: First Individual competition
All riders compete in the first qualifier. The best 60 Individual riders (including those tied for 60th place) and all Team riders ranked lower than 60 progress to the second round.

Second round: first round of Team competition and second Individual qualifying competition
The best 45 individual riders (including those tied for 45th place), based on combined scores from both rounds, and the best eight teams (including those teams tied for eighth place), based on scores from this round only, progress to the third round.

Third round: second round of Team competition and third Individual qualifying competition
The final placings for the Team event are determined by the sum of the scores in the first and second round of the Team competition.

After the third round, the best 35 riders (including those tied for 35th place), based on the combined scores, with a maximum of three from each country, progress to the fourth round.

Fourth round: Individual final round A
The best 20 riders (including those tied for 20th place), based on scores from this round only, progress to the fifth round.

Fifth round: Individual final round B
The final placings for the Individual event are determined by the sum of the scores in the Individual final rounds A and B.

If two or more rider/horse combinations are tied for medal places after the fifth and final round of the Individual event, there is a jump-off to break the tie.

So, the Saudi’s ARE winning right now? Thanks for the link–I’ve been looking all over the website, but it gets confusing.

The Saudis have spent some serious money on horses and training and they have some good riders these days. Check out the Final Four at the WEG in 2010, there was a Saudi rider in there.

Yes they are in the lead.
One more team round tomorrow.

I DO remember the 2010 WEG and the Saudi rider. He looked like he was about to have a heart attack riding the other horses. I love the switching horses part. It says SO much about the horses and riders.

Well, not in a bad way, but that says something about buying your way into the sport. The Saudi’s have worked hard and have the money. Wow.

I would LOVE to see that happen in Dressage. Now THAT would be a test of riding.

Yeah! I agree! Dressage riders are WAY too weenie to do that, though!

Sleeping on the lead is no easy task.
I think there is less than two rails separating KSA and the teams tied for eighth.
Anything can happen tomorrow.

I agree that it’d be nice for the Dressage riders to switch horses like the show jumpers too but I also agree that they’d be to weenie to do that! Don’t want to give someone a heart attack.

Yes, it’s still all to play for. And good point about the pressure of being on the lead. We’ll see what kind of mettle the Saudi riders are made of tomorrow.

I think they´re arrogant enough ( please do not take that the wrong way) to actually sleep well and take a medal. The horses looked awfully good, that Sultan could almost take me  around a S klasse!

A Saudi rider also won individual bronze at the Sydney Olympics. Khalid al Eid (sp?)

Does anybody know who has been coaching the KSR riders? I know Sharbatly was training w/ Roderigo for a while but what about the others? Who is their chef?

Stanny van Paesschen.

The Saudis were seriously impressive. Yes they have very nice horsepower, but I also saw some very smart decision making! Its nice to see some contenders that we didn’t expect. Its better for the sport than having the same 1-2-3 again and again.

Who expected Germany, Belgium and France to all be out in this stage of the game? Who expected the US to be tied for the final spot in tomorrows game?

Makes for a much more exciting showdown!

Local NBC only aired 30 minutes of the SJ. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Are there vids somewhere to watch?

Yes, and they only showed one US rider. What about Beezie, Reed and Rich? Do they not count? That made me mad!
