Am I the only one who smells like a barn?

No matter how clean we keep our barn, there is always a unique “barn smell” associated with it. It seems like it is always more pungent during the winter/drier months. If I am not planning on washing my hair, I have to wear a toboggan to keep my long hair from smelling. I have a designated barn coat and boots but can sometimes find myself checking on the horses during my lunch break in my work clothes and heels.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the barn smell as I associate it with my favorite place, but I am not so sure everyone else does. Anyone have any “eau de barn” secret remedies?

My boss claims to have an amazing sense of smell and told me I always smell faintly like horses. Lol

No.

My husband complains when I come back that my coat, my hair, everything smells like a barn… not to mention my car… I love it…

Hair really absorbs odor (so does wool, since it is hair). It is very porous. I remember how bad it used to smell after a night out, before the no smoking laws. ICK.

I am not sure if dry shampoo or rubbing it with a dryer sheet would work for horsey odor- those were both rec’d by someone who used to go from work at a restaurant to work at another job. They have stainless steel bars to remove odors from skin…wonder if that would work?

The smell on my hair is reduced if I wear a stocking cap & stuff it all inside. I am not sure if a bandanna would work.

The smell on my coat, etc is def stronger in the winter when everything is closed up.

I keep a pair of wellies in my car & put those on if I stop at the barn when “dressed” (looks great with skirts). You could do that, and maybe the same with a coat/sweatshirt to cover up. In school we used coveralls. Leave the car window down on the way back to air out (works even better in cold weather)

Yikes, I never realized my hair could smell like it! My clothes, yes, shoes, definitely yes. Even washing the clothes doesn’t get the smell out completely. No advice, everyone knows I have horses so I guess they aren’t surprised. I do have lots of expensive perfume courtesy of my hubby, guess I know why.

Wet hair absorbs the smell even more!!!

My hair is short now, so not long enough to pull around and actually smell on my own. But now its short enough that I can put on a winter cap, protect it from smells, and never have hat hair either, so I guess I have a quick fix!

OP, cut your hair short and put a hat on! LOL!

My “winter boots” are my Bogs. So, when I’m done at the barn in the morning, I hose them off before leaving for work [horses are half way between my house and work, so I do chores on my way to work, dressed in work clothes]. Rinsing the boots off helps a great deal.

In the winter, I also have uninsulated ski pants that I wear over my work pants. Keep me warmer, and protect my pants from hay, smell, etc.

The coat though…there is no help for that. I just spray it down with body spray every few days.

I hate the ammonia smell of some barns. I do a lot to keep the barn from smelling like nasty barn – mats, keep horses out, lots of gravel, Sweet PDZ, scrub aisle with Pine-Sol, use pelleted bedding, etc. Even then, I would never wear my Muck Boots in public and I do NOT let those things in my house. They live outside on the porch. Neoprene holds odor. Vile.

I definitely have a different set of clothes/boots for barn vs. house, and shower when done with the barn for the day. I wash my hair too – and with long hair that takes a long time to dry, pretty much live with wet hair. Not sure when the last time my hair was fully dry. That’s particularly awesome in winter, when it freezes outside and gets all crinkly. Icicle hair is a deadly weapon!

Many many years ago, I warned my daughter that she should be more careful about wearing shoes to the barn that she would later wear to school.

I told her that the kids would make smart remarks about her smelling like a horse.

I will never forget her reply:

With total self confidence, she said: “They will only be jealous.”

So don’t worry about it.
