Amateur/Pro Rule Question

Hello Everyone! So I have some understanding of the USEF amateur/pro rules but if a rider that shows at USEF shows is also paid to exercise horses in a different discipline do they need to register as a pro? Reason I ask is because I have the opportunity to be paid to exercise polo horses that I would absolutely love to do but I don’t know if it would affect my status. Can someone clarify for me?

Yes, you would be a pro by usef standards

The amateur rule does not differentiate between disciplines. If you get paid to exercise or train horses in any discipline, you are a pro in all disciplines.

Didn’t someone say one time on here that it did not apply to galloping racehorses?

If they did, they were incorrect

Thank you! I wasn’t aware that it applies to all disciplines. It would have been such a great opportunity but oh well.

Once upon a time USEF said via the Amateur Inquiry email that galloping racehorses did not count–sort of. They were telling people that they could but, that if someone contested it formally, that their stance might change. Or words to that effect. More recently they said it was a violation of the rule.

Thanks. I thought I remembered some discussion about it.

Well that was a frustratingly unhelpful response …but what do we expect from USEF? :woman_facepalming:

A while back they had an incorrect view on the effect of galloping on ammy status.

Now though, it’s been correctly brought into line. It’s a pro activity.
