Amazing color change in one month (foal)

My neighbor has horses that I’ve helped with and worked with for 6 years. Though sadly not as often since I moved to Florida. Back in June I came for a visit and saw this shy filly at 3 weeks old

Fast forward to today and I was shocked! The dad is a buckskin

I wonder what color she would be if she was body-clipped?

It would be interesting to see some day. Right now she is a carbon copy of dad

Look at the hair around the eyes, especially as the foal gets older . That should give you an idea of what it will turn out like. Some really do change drastically from birth to the first time they shed out.

There is a genetics lab in California called Etalon. They do a lot of research. They have a $99 mini panel that does color, including all 30-something dominant white genes. Pattern. Health and behavior which looks at a variety of diseases. I know now after 20 years my horse is n/n for HYPP and has 2 copies of the curiosity gene. That explains a lot. He has sprint genes so I would have lost money if I had raced him beyond 8 furlongs. I had the color done at UC Davis but they don’t do as much with colors and patterns and no health/behavior. My gelding is a sabino Paint but doesn’t have the Sb gene. The pattern shows up in other breeds. I think there is something hiding somewhere. He has one copy of lethal white overo and one copy of W20. If that is all you need to get a sabino there should be one on every corner looking for a home.
