American Appendix Horse Association - is it legit?

I discovered this weekend that my horse has a lip tattoo which I did not know about. I’ve had him about 5 years and was told he was an Appendix QH but they did not have papers. At the time I was told he was 14, which would make him 19 now. After discovering the tattoo I tried to do some research and discovered he’s not AQHA registered, but I ran across AAHA which also had a tattoo look up. They said they located him (2855Y) and offered to register him, but indicated his birth year is 2004 not 2000. I am positive we have the number correct and am interested more in his background information than having him registered anywhere. The AAHA’s website is less than impressive and now I’m second guessing if they actually have legit info, especially with the age difference and the fact I have to pay $45 to register him to get the information. The barn that sold him may have made an honest mistake since they did not have his papers. But since he’s tattooed he has to registered somewhere?

Does any one have any experience with this organization? Is there any reason to not trust that the information is accurate? Could that type of tattoo sequence belong to any other type of registry? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

How did you find out he’s not AQHA registered? To me that does not make sense.Have you called them? Their database is not available online like the TB

There was a link to a free records search on the AQHA website. When I type his number in it says it’s not a good number. I have not called. I also read that AQHA registered Appendix QH’s have a number that begins with an X? I don’t know if that applies to racing QH’s as well. I didn’t even know QH’s were tattooed honestly. And to clarify, the AAHA offered to transfer ownership, not do a first time registration.

Definitely call AQHA first. I don’t know much about QHs but pretty sure they have to be AQHA registered to race.

All appendix QHs registration numbers start with an x, unless they have received a ROM by either showing or racing and been advanced into the main registry. Their tattoos do not. I would call AQHA and see if they can run his tattoo number for you. It’s been years since I’ve looked at the record site, do they have lookups for tattoos?

The tattoo number isn’t the registration number, two different things. Never heard of the American Appendix Horse Association, I suppose it could be a real association, maybe a bit more sleuthing on google and look for reviews. Are you sure your horse isn’t a TB? Have you searched for your horse by name on equibase.com?

This sounds like a racing QH or Appendix tattoo. I would call the AQHA for more information. It is most likely he is registered with them.

X makes sense as X was used in the Morgan registry to indicate an outcross, a horse not of the Morgan breed. The Morgan registry closed its book in the late 1940s afterwards there were no more new outcrosses registered, just the historical ones

The American Quarterhorse registry used much of the Morgan format for its registry in the early stages

I have a tattooed racing appendix, there is no X in hers. AQHA tattoos are not available to search online, you have to call them to look it up.

To me it sounds like AAHA is a weird online association that exists to charge new appendix owners $45 to look up info on their horse that can be obtained for free on the phone from AQHA

That would be because your horse to be registered in the AQHA as a Appendix Quarter Horse would have to earn the register of merit.

Welcome to our community. When you look at a post. There will be a date in the top right corner. If it’s shown as “MMD”, month day, its recent. But if its shown as MM’Y, its month’ year.

So Jun19 is this past Jun 19th, Jun’19 is Jun 2019.

When this site pulls up related subjects or “posts of interest”, it can be from anything in the past 10 or more years. Don’t particularly care for that, fooled me a few times too and not a
newcomer

Hope OP here found the info they were looking for and Carolina_ Rancher hangs around in our community.
