American Connemara Pony Society to add a Connemara Sport Horse Registry

After two years of hammering out the details, the ACPS will be offering registration for Halfbred Connemara stallions and 1/4 Connemaras (Connemara Sporthorses)! These options will be in addition to registering purebred Connemaras and Halfbred Mares and Geldings.

These new options mean that the following are eligible for registration:

Halfbred Stallions

The offspring of Halfbred x Halfbred (*at least one Halfbred parent must be registered) = Connemara Sport Horse

The offspring of (registered) Halfbred x non-Connemara = Connemara Sport Horse

Halfbred Stallions that have a TFC (temporary foal certificate) or have a registered purebred parent and can obtain a covering certificate can be registered NOW. The fee for registration is $250 (for an ACPS member) and includes the DNA kit and microchip.

Connemara Sport Horses will be able to be registered as of April 1st. Eligible horses or ponies will need to have one Halfbred parent that is registered. The fee for registering a Halfbred or Connemara Sport Horse is $75.

I am so excited that we are finally able to offer this! I believe the Connemaras have a lot to offer for sport horse breeding, bringing brains, soundness, hardiness and a lot of jump to the equation. I have been breeding halfbreds and 1/4-breds for upper level eventing for a number of years now and firmly believe they can compete on the international stage.

I was thrilled to see William Micklem mention the Connemara in his breeding article: http://eventingnation.com/home/william-micklem-believes-u-s-breeding-on-the-right-track/

Please feel free to contact me privately for more information!

Will this be open to your northern neighbours who don’t have this option yet?

I am thrilled to see this now,but it I wish it would have been available for my idsh mare a few years back. It’s great they are branching out. Will those horses be eligible for acps awards and points towards the golden shamrock?

I plan to register several 1/4-breds that are already on the ground. Your mare may be eligible if she has a registered halfbred parent and you can have the stallion owner sign a covering certificate.

Connemara Sporthorses will be eligible for Achievement Awards, so yes, can work towards their Golden Shamrock

Wayne Quarles and Chris Knox have offered to help get their awards program going. We have several through USEF already for purebreds and halfbreds. I’m also hoping to find folks willing to donate trophies for Annual ACPS awards.

I’m not sure how that works Janet? I don’t think we can register your purebreds or halfbreds…

My mare has an idsh book, so I would assume they would accept that. They parentage is verified already. I will have to look into it!

Yeah, I was just curious because of how the ACPS used to register us :stuck_out_tongue:

What about ISH registered 1/2 Connemaras, in Ireland with papers? There is nothing here for them!!

Weatherford, that was part of my intent, to capture many of the imported ISH that are taking US eventing by storm, that are actually half-Connemara. If they have registration papers from Ireland, and their Connemara half was registered, we can register them.
