Amish Trainer in PA/MD? UPDATE: She Drives!

I think my Amish trainer might have fallen through - sounds like he’s too busy. If anyone knows of an Amish trainer in SE PA or MD who deals with orangutans and isn’t very rough, please pm me. My brat needs to find some religion along side a Belgian. The horse is already with a trainer; both he and I think this is the best way to fix her, we just don’t know anyone else (sort of) local.

I will second the recommendation for Sam Smucker. I do know him personally. He trained my wild ass hackney pony a few years ago. I’ve helped trained others to drive when I was younger and didn’t have ostreoporosis, so when it came his turn, I let sensibility tell me to send him out for training.

I was first recommended another Amish guy in the the same area… somewhere off Noble Road. Can’t remember his name, which is good for him, since I found my pony with a horrible rope burn under his fetlock the first week he was there. He said his son was riding him to break him- son was a big guy and pony is 12.2. But he thought the rope burn might have been from having his leg tied up??? Needless to say I dashed home, got the trailer and went right back for him. Got my pony and demanded my money back. I was a bit gun shy for an Amish man breaking my pony to say the least. (should I mention the little white bichons dogs in wire cages in the back of his barn?)

Several people recommended Sam and I made the trek back to Lancaster to meet him. He was very nice, barn was small but new, clean and airy. Has a nice sized ring with a round pen in the middle. The only problem I had was his high tensile fencing which scares the crap out of me. I watched him riding a nice WB that was only there for a week and he was trotting and steering quite nicely.

He starts horses/ponies for Lisa Singer’s clients- that says it all for me. He learned all his horse knowledge from a trainer in Chester County who breaks a lot of hunters for BNTs.

My pony came home well trained. He stands quietly to be hitched, knows his different trots and walks calmly…just spooks at things for the hell of it. Keeps it interesting.

So after my logwinded tale- call Sam.

Thanks guys, I found someone.

She is on her way to Paul Hoover for some time driving double. By the time Sam got back to me I had already made other arrangements.

I’ve worked with other Amish trainers; I’ve been the one holding the rope so the orangutan can’t get up. It isn’t always pretty, but that doesn’t mean it was rough. There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

And no, you don’t need to mention the guy’s dog breeding business.

Paul Hoover is one I would have recommended IF I could remember his name or found his card

We got recommended to him by sevral people I respect

Also looked at a horse he had for sale

Best of Luck

I have a driving horse! Again!

Went up yesterday to check on little Miss Priss, and she is driving ALL by herself, like a big horse. Hooks fine, still will run you over unhooking (if you’re stupid), and goes down the road like a champ, no hesitation or balking at all. And she’s still looky and uses her ears. A little bit like Alice in Wonderland - Oh look, a cow. but not spooky, just looks, at everything. From left to right, it was pretty funny really.

Now we just have to get her home. We might even make a show this year.

GREAT NEWS ! ! !

sounds like you are off to a new start
Keep it going positive and forward

Awesome! Pictures?!
