Ammonia smell from urine

Desperately need help here. House-sitting. Client is aware elderly k9 pees in the house… to the point of preferring that to eliminating out side. Client shampoos her house rugs literally weekly to combat pee. I have chosen to lock offending dog in the kitchen… and yet… the pee smell persists.

I’m using Nature’s Miracle according to package instructions, and another product. The rug is still stinky though and I was thinking baking soda sprinkled on the rug would combat THAT area… Client said simply to Febreeze it.

What do you suggest for old urine smell on rugs?
Ok, and on tile?

Dog won’t use pee pee pads, and nearly had a heart attack when I tried to put a diaper on her…

Not much will help. Probably necessary to professionally steam clean the carpets to really do the job…but depending on how big/how old, it might be too late. White vinegar has some amazing properties…might be worth a try. The problem is that if you don’t really saturate the pee smell nothing will remove it; but if you saturate it you’ll need to pull the moisture out or it will just mildew.

On tile I would try vinegar or, when my old dog was having incontinence issues - bleach water. (Disclaimer, yes I know about ammonia + bleach – don’t do this while dog is lying nearby, although probably still not unsafe with dried urine smell.)

“Out” products sold at Walmart are hydrogen peroxide based. They seem to work well on cat pee odor. Peroxide can bleach synthetics and always bleaches natural fibers. Should be great on tile. I’ll often use plain peroxide on the places that can take it. Inject into or beneath carpet using some type of syringe or marinade injector can work miracles.

Rubbing alcohol may also work. I buy the 90% at Dollar General. Alcohol dissolves shellac so do not use on old shellac woodwork. Is also flammable, so is not safe to drench large areas. It’s just spot treatment.

If pee is in the pad, pull up carpet, replace all pad, treat flooring underneath. Then thoroughly treat or replace carpet. That’s what owner has to do. Might need to replace subfloor too, if it’s osb or plywood. People who let animals pee in the house are batty. Occasional accident is managible. Continuous pee damages things beyond repair. Her house is well past shampoo the carpet stage.
