An Adequan timing question

So, accoding to the packaging, Adequan is a shot every 3 days. Vet says that’s Friday, Tuesday, Saturday, etc. Which doesn’t entirely make sense to me as I think that’s every 4th day, but OK. I’ll largely do as I’m told.

My question is, during this complicated Festive Season, if you couldn’t make it to the barn on shot day, would you give it a day early or a day late? I lean towards early, and then picking up the regular schedule of every third day from there.

What say you?

Hmmm good question. I tended to do one day late when my schedule got complicated. But maybe one day earlier would have been better.

Honestly this is why I switched to Zycosan. I hated the schedule of trying to give Adequan lol!! It stressed me a little as I didn’t want to waste so much money!

I’ve done a day late a few times (when I’ve forgotten :sob:) and still saw the same results. I’ve also heard it explained “every 4 days,” so the same way you mentioned: Friday (1, 2, 3, 4th day is Tuesday), etc.

Company schedule:
Dosing and administration | Adequan® i.m. (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan)

I have done one day early or late. Given the choice, I do early.

It’s every 4 days.

If you give it Friday, then Saturday is the 1st day, which means Tuesday is the 4th day. Then Saturday, etc

Count in terms of hours. That might help the “days” make more sense.

Straight from the Adequan site based on their research:
“Once injected, peak levels of Adequan i.m. in the joints are achieved within two hours. Hyaluronic acid (HA) levels nearly double at 48 hours with significant increases noted from 24 up to 96 hours.”

I really depends if you are trying to treat something, or if you are doing Adequan as prevention. If I have an arthritic horse, then if I need to miss a shot, I would rather give it a day early. If there are no real issues with said horse, then I would give it a day late. That’s just my personal preference.

You choose.

FYI, I have used Adequan for most of my horses but I keep my guy Red on it on a regular basis. He moves so much better that way; otherwise he has a “hitch” in his step. I did the loading dose, and then I give it to him every 2 weeks when he being used more, and then I’ll taper down to every 4 weeks when he’s not being ridden much. It’s been trial and error over the years but this has worked best for him. Of course, all horses are different.

Thanks all! I think we’ll slide it in a day early.

He does have some hock arthritis. He’s not lame, in fact he’s moving really rather well, but he’s a big mover and I can just feel it’s not AS well as immediately after his hock injections take effect.

He’s been working really hard recently and had a long trailer ride and a big show last month, and it is cold, which makes him spooky, and the ground is lumpy and frozen and uneven in turnout, so I just felt he could use a little something to help.

(Decision helped by the fact that my vet pharmacy had $50 off. Happy Christmas to him :))

Sweet! Glad you can get a deal for you and some good joint juice for your hard working boy.

I gave my mare a course in October. I was going to be a day off dose #4 because I was out of town. I took care of that when I forgot dose #3 and it got delayed a day. Seeing it is a 7 dose protocol, I don’t think a day (late or early) on one dose is a big deal.
