I wonder if these gender rules still work post sufferage
It seems that perhaps having gender clothing rules should go the way of other gender based rules (like no women in the club house or the Senate).
I would think any hunt would be thrilled to have someone interested in helping their sport survive.
My first hunt was Genesseo. I can probably quote “Riding to Hounds in America” and I think I might just get some tan tops for my Dehners someday.

The sport is dominated by women and it’s been a long time since we were turned out in a sidesaddle habit.
I hardly think the tops of our boots is cause for a suffragette hunger strike. Gentlemen with colors wear boot tops too.

Interesting…glad to hear you say this ssr, I too have always understood and been taught that those without colors should not be in frocks or shadbelly. Plain-cut melton coats only.
And my Mother was the ultimate turn-out nazi…so much so that we wore jodhpurs until 18 years old!!!
But, having said that, my Mother never taught/enforced/complied with the black or white only evening dress at a hunt ball, and she attended many hunt balls, including many MFH balls over many decades!

Could somoene point out the difference between a hunt coat and a frock coat for this very attire-challenged person? Are frock coats those really long ones (almost reaching knees)?
My husband bought me an RJ class coat a couple of years ago. I believed it was a frock coat (according to label), but its length is about the same length as a normal hunt coat (OK, maybe very slightly longer) so I’m confused:(
The major difference is not length, but cut and tailoring.

Notice the tailoring about the waist and the cut of the pocket flaps.
Also, frocks have two buttons at about waist level on the back. Hunt jackets do not.

I always thought either hunt or frock coats were acceptable and the “color” on the collar is what differentiates members with color or not.
This is my only “winter” coat that is also black. I have tons of hunt coats but they are summer coats.:no:

I do not understand the nastyness here. I was only saying that I don’t understand having gender based clothing rules.
I totally understand having different ways to tell who has their colors but being told not to wear boots because they have the “wrong” color tops seem silly.

Hunting is all about tradition. That’s why people love it. One of those traditions is gender based clothing. Live with it.

I think it’s silly to wear dressage attire. Next time I show in dressage I’m going to wear my WP showmanship outfit.

I am not suggesting you wear your western pleasure outfit to a dressage show. I am suggesting it is wrong to tell boys they have to wear something different than girls.
I am suggesting that having gender based rules implies an acceptance of gender differences that I do not think should be accepted.

perhaps I am super sensitive because I am getting tired of hearing marriage is between one man and one woman because that is how it has always been.
perhaps I am super senstivie because my gay male friend whose husband is serving in Iraq won’t be notified if his husband is killed because their marriage is not recognized because marriage is between one man and one woman.
It is not silly to have a discussion about why we do things the way we do.

Before you can proclaime equality between genders, you first have to realize that genders ARE different; only then can you appreciate the differences and their respective strength and weakness, and then achieve their equality.
And then you have to realize that the expectation of the attire between genders in itself does not make equal or unequal between genders. It is how you express your genders that make the difference.
And that means respect the tradition and customs, as long as the said tradition/custom does not put discrimination between genders, and I dare say the minor differences in attire between male/female members does not qualify for discrimination.
