An Unintentional Joke on the Cat!

It’s a joke on the cat!

Pharaoh and I have a routine. She asks to get into my lap when I’m at the computer desk, carefully enters without stepping on the keyboard (Feline Household Commandment #1: Thou shalt not step upon the keyboard), and inverts herself to lie on her back baby style, snuggled up against me. She then reaches up just once with a paw to gently hook the cord of my headphones. She does this with a grin while looking at me. I say, “No.” She withdraws the paw. I say, “You know that’s off limits. The answer isn’t going to change.” She gives another feline smile and settles in contentedly, ignoring the headphones cord for the rest of the cuddle.

However, I’m not typing right now. The server is down on the transcription job and has been for hours. Long-term delay. Thus, my headphones are not on me and are instead safely stashed over on the ToFES (Table of Forbidden Electronic Stuff) in the corner. This is nearly unheard of. Almost always at this desk, I am either typing or taking a short break from it or about to start typing. The headphones are routinely on me.

Pharaoh jumped up, positioned herself while avoiding the keyboard, got fully upside down, snuggled in, and reached up with her paw - to air. One eye advanced from lazily cracked to fully open. She waved the paw, questing. The other eye fully opened. She twisted her neck, looking all around, then back at me. I was sitting there smiling, not having said a word. The cord simply was missing. Then came one sharp protest meow, a clear feline comment of, “That’s not funny.”

“Yes, it was,” I replied.

Wish I had a video of that. It looked so much like a scene from a comedy. My laughter offended her, too. It took the cat a few minutes to get regruntled and go to sleep.

How cute!

That’s cute!

But all cat owners know that one must not laugh at the expense of a cat because when you’re least expecting it they will settle the score and come out of it one up.

(But CT makes a good point. ) (Except for the term “owners.” :D)
