Anatomic Western headstall

Do they ex![](st?

Would love to find a western style headstall but with a crownpiece more like this. I’ve never seen such a thing in a western headstall, but I figured here would be the place to ask

A better mouse trap? An improvement looking for a problem?

What is the headstall like that supposed to accomplish?

I believe the idea behind an anatomic bridle is to provide a cutaway for the ears for relief and some extra cushioning.

I’ve never seen a specifically western headstall with that anatomic piece. Typically, I purchase heavy oiled harness leather tack. I find it has a nice feel to it. You may be able to find someone who could make you what you’re looking for, but I’ve never seen one available for purchase.

I’ve never seen a western headstall with that THICK of a crown piece.

With a normal thinner piece of leather going on the crown, I don’t see a need for an “anatomical shape” because there is usually plenty of space for everything behind the ears.

It’s a fad. The crownpiece does not bother a horse’s ear muscles.

I have a fat eared horse that would disagree with you.

But I also agree with the above posters, that the straps of a western bridle don’t seem to cause the same issues as an English bridle, even my fat eared horse doesn’t get the wrinkles behind her ears with the western, whereas she did with the English.

That crownpiece doesn’t look very comfortable to me.

If you’re concerned about ear room, why not just get a one-ear bridle? If you do, get one with a throatlatch.

If you insist on that particular crownpiece, just remove the cavesson and its hanger and use the bridle with your western tack.

I see no reason to buy a heavy harness-type bridle. Lighter is more comfortable, for horses as for humans.
