I found a good deal on a M. Toulouse anatomical girth and was wondering about it? I’ve read the style frees up the movement of the horse etc, but the horse I usually ride has high withers and I’m afraid the girth will make the saddle slide back more? I really like how it has elastic at both ends and and three d rings for training aids, does anyone know of any girths with that but not anatomical if it would cause a problem? PLEASE ANSWER QUICK! Thanks!!
Depends on the horse. They work great for some, and not for others. My saddle slips with one (if I keep everything else the same, it won’t slip with a straight girth).
If the saddle is adjusted correctly, it shouldn’t slip. I have County anatomicals and I love them.
I’ve never had a saddle slip with an anatomical girth- I use them on both my horses, and the two ones previous. They all have/had very different body types, from shark fin TB to rounder WB.
I didn’t like the M. Toulouse I had years ago because the leather was stiff and it didn’t hold up well to daily use. However, that was many years ago- at least 7 or 8- so perhaps they are better now.
I have a couple of Countys, but the one I really like and use on my young horse is a Total Saddle Fit one. Very soft and wide and well-made.
Following… Also curious is there a sale somewhere on them or is this a private sale? Considering one for my mare
I’ve never had slipping issues with the two I use on my VERY roundy horse. I have a Tekna synthetic and a Voltaire. The Voltaire was a huge amount of money but is probably the nicest piece of tack I own. Can’t speak to the quality of the Toulouse, but if you just want to try one as an experiment, the Teknas are great (and cheap).
I’ve only used an anatomical (ADT & Black Country) girth with my jump saddle and my saddle doesn’t slip. It did slip at one point when the tree became too narrow (horse changed) and I got a new saddle and all was well again.
I am personally not a fan of Toulouse girths. For the retail price, they are not worth it and I would spend the extra $50 and get ADTs version. But if you are getting a smoking deal, then it’s probably all good
Never had them slip but also never could tell much difference between them and regular girths on my horses who were various shapes. I suppose some horses might benefit depending on the individual.
I am always skeptical of things that cost more then basic equipment of good quality and proper fit. YMMV.
They are really excellent for a certain body type. If your horse has a very forward girth groove, coupled especially with a wide/well-sprung barrel…and your saddle “wants” to be pulled FORWARD over the withers…but you want to keep it “BACK”, then the anatomical is great for you.
There are other types that provide nice freedom of elbow/comfort…made for different shaped horses. Remember this is really ideal for the forward-girth-groove type horse
