And She Peed!

I’ve had my mare since she was 6 - she’s now 22. All those years, she would not pee under saddle (I trail ride), even if we went out for hours.

Well today, she kept getting slower and slower, head lower and lower, and she suddenly swung around sideways on the trail and let loose! I got up off her back, hugged her neck and told her “Good girl, pee pee”. Now if anyone non-horse had seen that LOL!

I figured you all would understand this accomplishment. Now to get her to drink water during/after rides.

I’ve had my mare for 6 years and she’s never peed under saddle. Once she did the “I’m in heat” type pee and I was WTF? She’s also never passed manure under saddle or in the aisle.

Good Girl!

I was following a friend’s trailer with her mare loaded when we stopped for gas.
BIG COMMOTION! from her trailer :open_mouth:
Rocking, squealing…
Then a forceful stream, right out the back door :ocean:
Seems mare had been okay holding it until the motion stopped, then pretty PO’d she had to let go while in the trailer.
Luckily no one was parked at the pump behind :smirk:

I was riding with a friend last fall and her mare kept acting like she needed to pee, we even stopped several times to give her a chance. About 5 minutes from the trailers after about a 2 hour ride she just stopped and went while we laughed.

This fall my OTTB has finally figure out drinking from creeks after several years of trail riding.

I had a mare that would wait to pee after a ride until she was loaded in the trailer. Then she’d let loose. I once waited an extra 30 minutes after a lesson with her tied to the trailer waiting for her to pee. I gave up and put her in and as soon as she got in, she peed. Crazy girl.

I have owned my mare for 17 years and my daughters mare 11 and every other mare in the past for as long or longer and never has 1 peed under saddle!

Did the trailer have shavings in it? I know mares are usually picky about the ‘splash factor’ of it all lol.

Best trailer pee my mare did was when someone was tailgating me. I looked back to see where he was at and saw his car slow down and the wipers go on.

Bet he never tailgated a horse trailer again! LOL!

That happened driving the DanRyan in Chicago yrs ago I had an old open back 2 horse bumper pull. The asshat tail gating behind got wind flung horse poop all over his car.

I’ve used an old bucket to catch pee before. Spares a mess in the trailer, aisleways etc.

Ours have seldom been shy about peeing. Not sure if they learn by watching the older horses. They pee under saddle, in harness, in the barn aisle after a long drive and in the trailer. When we drove more miles to compete, they were “truck trained!” Riding in the stock trailer they would pee when you turned off the truck engine. In the semi, they would pee when you put on the air brakes! They knew they would not be moving for a while, best make use of the opportunity!!

In use, we give them opportunities to pee by stopping on a grassy road edge, standing for a while. Most effective with mares in season who need to go more often. Riding is similar, stop by the road edge on grass and wait a bit. Usually get a result shortly.

One older, experienced horse would pee when loaded in the trailer at shows. He would not let his guard down with other horses moving around him. We figured he felt protected with trailer walls or stall walls around him so he could pee safely! 99% of the time he would pee in less than 10 minutes, took him back out for more classes. Told daughter he could not pay attention when he has to pee! She TOTALLY undestood!! Ha ha

I would rather clean trailer twice than have a horse who won’t go.

When I was driving my ponies in easy entry carts, I was always grateful that they were both geldings and not mares. I’m sure if my mare drove, she would have a made a point to pee in my face.

Neither of the boys liked to pee on the road, but they always managed to let me know when they needed to let loose. I would take them off the side of the road onto grass, and they would immediately pee. I don’t blame them for not wanting to splash themselves.
