angle iron for protecting wood edges

I am going to need to utilize Lowes or Home Depot (really…I am aware there are better choices from stall kit makers, etc, but I have to go with one of those for product)…and they’re not going to have the galvanized options but rather only aluminum or the steel---- Is there any reason you feel the aluminum? would not be safe? It will be easier to cut and drill…(I do not want to use the slotted ones…just too cheezy looking)
If you suggest the heavy iron , can you please share drill bit types needed? and if we need to cut lengths what we should use?

thanks so much! Gonna stop one of my beavers…

I just did a galvanized edge yesterday. $2 for 10 feet and it was 1.5" deep on both sides. To get 1.5" in the angle iron or aluminium was a lot more money and I needed 5 sheets. I found it in the roof stuff at Lowes. It was thicker than the normal aluminum drip edge, and the edges were rolled, so it wasn’t sharp. When I cut the end off, I used a needle nose pliers and rolled the edge (I also attached it flush, but did the rolled edge just to be extra safe). I used liquid nails (I don’t want them to be able to pull it off) along with some flat head roofing nails to attach it to the ledge.

I think what I did was safer than just sheeting it, but I imagine your angle iron would be best, just because of thickness. I just don’t have the skill set to fabricate that. I was going to do aluminum until I saw this, but aluminum vs. of angle iron may indeed be safer–it is a lot thicker. For me it was $2 for 10’ vs $40 for 8’ plus drilling holes that decided it. I feel pretty good with it glued down all over.

I boarded at a barn where they used PVC on the edge. Too much cutting for me.

TTP: you sound much more innovative than I am! I have some posts that have walls attached/etc, and the corner ‘depth’ area is minimum…I’ll have to use the corner stuff I think? what I was looking at was: does anyone feel this stuff: http://www.lowes.com/pd_103633-37672-11362_1z0vj9r+1z0xzpg+1z106jk__ is not safe? to use for protection of chewing corners?

I’ve bought steel ones already predrilled and cut to order from a steel manufacturer cheaper than the box stores. Then you don’t have to worry about cutting steel!! I’ve always thought anyone selling to horse peeps are expensive. I’d avoid “horse kits” wherever possible. You can try your local welder too for help. good luck!

I picked up old bed frames at the salvage center and it worked great (medium thickness angle iron). For my 6x6 in the stall, we used galvanized metal flashing and nailed it on with roofing nails. No issues with any of it.

You can cut angle iron with a metal grinder (cut-off type).

There should be galvanized angle in the same area as the metal studs.

There are also stud tracks that will cover 3 sides of a 2X4.

The aluminum is fine, just hideously expensive.

Thanks, airhorse, (and all)…yeah, the cost is truly hideous. But, hubby came down this weekend and so far (don’t ask how much!) the two stalls have all post edges/etc. DONE *yes, aluminum… we’ll move on to the run in and those posts (!!!) next time, or next lottery win!
