Angle Iron

What size angle iron is everyone using for their stall dividers? There seems to be a big difference in price between 1.5" and 2". Also, is 3/16" metal thickness normal? My stalls are 12x14’ if that matters.

ETA- I’m assuming if my walls are 8’ then my iron needs to be as well? Just double checking!

we had a metal working company that built heating duct work bend 9 ga fiat steel on thier metal brake into a U shape that matched the lumber cost was $5 per six foot piece

If you want to drop your lumber in there, not try to bolt or screw it, then you need U channel, not angle iron.

Anyone with actual dimensions they’ll share with me? I know there are lots of you with stall/barn building experience out there!

I will measure later this morning, the little darlings are still asleep

Not quite sure I understand the question. You want to use angle iron on the ends to drop/slip the stall wall board in? If so yes this can be used for this purpose. But 1 1/2" wide U-channel that is made for this purpose can be had and is cheaper and easier to install than buying two pieces of angle iron.

You don’t have to use either if you don’t want to. You can take an inexpensive 2X4 and rip/saw it down length wise to make a 1-1/2 by 1-1/2 “strips” Nail/screw it to the end walls to make a slip board channel. Simple and does the job. The 22 stalls in our barn were built that way years ago and they have stood the test of time just fine. Yes, the give “purchase” for horse to chew on. But horses will chew on lots of things in stalls. That’s what horses do. Wear and tear should be expected.

Yes, that is what I’m after. I’m finding that the price between a U channel, and 2 pieces of angle iron are pretty different. The 2 pieces have been cheaper around here anyways.

I like the idea of the wood channels, my hubs is fairly handy.

2 inches by 2 inches by 2 inches is the U channels we had made
