Anhydrosis (Again) Stress Level Pre Surgery

Well the Ol Man has thrown me another curve ball. A few weeks ago, he stopped sweating. It was a daily/ gradual reduction that I noticed right off and started him on “LetM Sweat” which was on hand from a rescue last year. I ordered One A/C. The weather changed and we had a week of mild temps and with both those products combined with the cooler temps, he started sweating.

Three days ago, he stopped sweating again. This time it was sudden. Heat index has been at 110 for past three days. He was still on both LetM Sweat and One A/C. I hadn’t taken him off. Today I’m going to buy Guinness Stout and let him have a cool one midday for a while to see if that helps.

His keratoma removal surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday. I’m going to call his vet to ask her opinion but I’ve decided I like to receive as many opinions as possible so I am asking. My gut instinct is to cancel the surgery because it is added stress on a stressed horse. The tumor is not a small one. It has probably been causing issues for the past two years… We are so close to taking care of that now that I’m second guessing myself.

I wouldn’t want to get the gauze wet if I hosed him down but could try misting with alcohol mixed with water, a fan, maybe the dark beer will help… wish I could air condition his barn but it isn’t practical. What do you all think about canceling?

Any other advice to keep him cool until he begins to sweat again?

I dont really know about the stress of surgery, but I have been dealing with my horse’s lack of sweat. I have used One AC, Sweatwerks, Guiness, and acupuncture. He will sweat some now - his chest and neck, but not under the saddle. He has not been greatly bothered by it. He is rehabbing and I am not good with heat, so I have been able to ride fairly normally, though I keep it in mind. When it is hot I will spritz him with a water/alcohol mixture before riding and hose him well after. He then goes under a fan in his stall. Fortunately the barn runs fans during the day and turns out at night.

I would definitely discuss with your vet whether they can manage him after a surgery if he is not sweating.

He’ll be on antibiotics post-op so the beer should be nixed once he’s had the surgery. I had an anhydrous horse…I sold him to a good home in OH to get him the hell out of AL. We never did have any substantial success with One AC, Let M Sweat, and lashes of Guinness. I wish you more success than we had!

Just bought a six pack of Guinness Stout to try, so six days worth total. Monday will be the 6th day. If taste alone could solve the anhidrosis, this would be the cure.:lol:

I had asked about fall surgery at the beginning of this due to the heat. He had already stopped sweating and started again and the consensus was that heat wouldnt be as difficult on this recovery as having an open wound would be… for flies mainly. I’m waiting for a call back from vet. And yes, I dislike Florida fr many, many reasons… I’ve lived here most of my life, my children were born here and I moved away twice and have been forced back due to family twice. Third time is the charm. Been looking at property in PA.

When we moved to central Florida many years ago, my quarterhorse developed severe anhydrosis (and sweet itch). In addition to using misters/fans in the shade, guinness, etc., my vet prescribed ventipulmin syrup, which helped the most. But sometimes, the only thing that helped was bringing my horse inside my house with A/C on full blast, and when I started doing that, I knew it was time to get out of Florida, so after two miserable Florida summers, we returned to northern Utah and all our problems disappeared.

A couple of hours after the Guinness and he has a little bit of sweating on his neck and between his front legs Vet hasn’t called back.

I have a friend in FL that has a non-sweating issue with her horses. She gives them One AC and something called “Malta”> Malta is essentially a dark, non alcoholic beer that can be found in any grocery store in the Hispanic food section. No one knows why it works–it just does.

Thank you. I’m familiar with Malta. Didn’t consider it but might work. It’s super sweet. Big thing in my Cuban family I’ll give it a try if the Guinness doesn’t kick it in. One AC has worked twice before. This time it’s caught me by surprise but the heat wave is too much even for Florida.

Have you tried ventipulmin syrup? It’s not meant for anhidrosis, but a side effect of the drug is that it causes sweating.

I haven’t. Read about it though. I’ll ask my vet when she calls. Still waiting on a call back.wish I could bring him inside the house…
