Anhydrosis--non sweater

I have a 20 yr.old mare that has never sweat since I have owned her,10 yrs.
Does anyone know of any new ideas out there, even though she is retired I would be interested in hearing of anything new on the market.
We have tried many things and nothing has worked.

Her kids all sweat normally.

I don’t know the scientific reason why it should work, but have been told it is effective. We gave it to a couple of horses in our barn that were non-sweaters or poor-sweaters and it seemed to help a bit. I don’t know if it really worked or if we just wanted to think that it did, but the horses liked it and 1 beer/day wasn’t going to cause any horse any harm. (The most trouble was in getting the barn owner to give the beer to the horses instead of drinking it himself. We are no longer at that barn.)

We had a pony who quit sweating one summer. I was never sure how much beer to give him, so I opted for the bee pollen remedy. I bought some from a health foood store, but it’s LOTS cheaper to get it from Valley Vet or other veternariy supply source. Just sprinkle some in the feed and within a week, we saw some improvement and full sweating returned within a month.

My guy developed sweating difficulties and this stuff worked well for him. My local tack shop carries it, but I haven’t seen it Dover’s or anyplace similar.

I purchase it directly from MPCO.LLC in Phoenix. You can call for more info @ 602-866-7701. (I believe this is a small family owned business so you’ll get a person - Mr. or Mrs. Leroy who are very nice.)

Hope this helps!

My gelding as a 3yr old was dry as can be in the middle of the desert summer. Pretty scary when they are doing the heat stress deal. Panting like a freight train, standing in the shade in their stall, dry as a bone.

He has been on One AC for the last two years and it is GREAT. He stays on year round. As a matter of fact I was thrilled last evening (sorry East coasters, it was 85 yesterday) to go and ride after work and there he was standing in the sun in his stall with a little sweat all over, but not stressed. Rode and had a good sweat.

Call me a believer. I get mine through a vet. It is about $25.00 a packet, lasts I don’t know a month or more.

One AC is quite good, but if you aren’t showing, clembuteral is even better… talk to your vet!

We use it on Questionairre (Lucy) in the summer. Works for her pretty well.

Thanks for that order info, we’ve been getting it through Dr. Furlong, at heaven knows what markup.

Worked for us on a young TB and on an elderly WB here in FL where there is plenty of time throughout the year to sweat!

The only things I know of are the old fashioned remedies: beer in the feed, or I’ve also heard of giving a eucalyptis (spelling??) leaf feed additive. I’ve heard of using gatorade too; but I’ve never tried that, the beer works but some people look at you funny

If you don’t have a sweater, try a jacket or a sweatshirt…

Sorry, the only “cure” I have ever heard of working was to move the horse north…why that works I have NO idea!

Betsy

I’ll second the beer remedy. I’ve known a horse it was fed to and seemed to work.

I know some of our non-sweaters were on a supplement that the vet prescribed last year, and it helped most of them significantly. It may have been One A/C.

Betsy, the reason they don’t sweat is because the humidity is so high in places like here in Southeast Texas and the rest of the South that it matches the internal temp of the horse and the horse’s internal heat regulator that tells it to sweat “switches off” – their bodies can’t differentiate between the humidity and their own sweat, so they stop sweating. That’s why moving them North or to a less humid climate helps them. And why we in the South have so much trouble with anhydrosis!
