Another book request...riding journal and/or book that addresses fear

I was thinking about a prompted riding journal as a Christmas gift for one of my friends. Most of the ones I see are for kids (which would not preclude her loving it), for someone who is competing, or some combo but for someone who owns a horse. She doesn’t need places to write in expenses for washing blankets (for some reason this was specifically listed as a feature of one particular book). Further complicating purchase dxn is that on-line, you can only see a few, if any, of the pages.

Have you used or seen any that you like?

Alternatively, are there any good books that specifically address working through fear when riding?

Brain Training for Riders by Andrea Monserrat Waldo is great

If you can’t find one that you like, what about creating your own? Buy a blank lined journal and print out your own prompts to add to the pages so you know they will all apply to her situation.

what about creating your own?

  1. I have only basic ideas what to include (since I can’t see inside any)

  2. I barely can take out my recycling. Actual creation it isn’t going to happen. Even if it is delivered to my door, getting it to her will be major task that may or may not be accomplished by March.

That would be a very good one, interesting for instructor and student both, I think.

Explains so much of what goes on in learning and teaching how to ride.
Knowledge is power and will help keep fear away.

I found Riding Fear Free by Laura Daley to be useful.

Jane Savoie’s books are quite good - addressing issues of riding fears and getting past them. That Winning Feeling and It’s Not Just About the Ribbons are the two I think would best address those issues.

Janet Edgette did a series on sports psychology for Practical Horseman several years ago. She has a book, Heads Up, that might be good, too. The Rider’s Edge, I think, was her first one.

You might also see if anyone on Etsy can make a riding journal like you’re thinking - there are people over there who make journals, and I’m sure some of them do custom work.

Regarding books to overcome fear, FearLESS Riding Success by Natasha Althoff was a life changer for me. Uses neural linguistic programing (NLP).
