Another breeding question - leasing a bitch?

Has anyone ever done it?

I own a stud dog and am very interested in breeding a puppy from my own dog. Have had some issues finding “the baby mama” and am back at square #1 again. :frowning: My dog has been requested by a few people we have turned down…and our top two picks aren’t going to work out. So…I’m starting over on a search for a “worthy bitch” and leasing was mentioned to me by my breeder.

I am not experienced enough for this - but she is, and she has connections - so a co-bred litter might be a possibility in the future. Just curious if anyone has leased a bitch in the past and what the specific arrangements were (e.g. who got the pick puppy, and what did the bitch owners want in return?).

I haven’t done it, but have had a leased bitch bred to my male. The person who leased the bitch bred her to my male, and whelped the litter, hoping to get a puppy out of it. Unfortunately there was only one puppy, by C-section, and she is co-owned by the original owner and myself. She lives with me and has finished her championship.

In this case, the person who leased the bitch did not get what she had hoped for, but it is not that common to have only one puppy.

I have considered leasing a bitch to breed to one of my males, but then the right bitch came along and used him. It sounds like a reasonable thing to do in your circumstances. It is something that is not uncommon to do.

It could be though that as soon as you arrange it, the right bitch will come along and want to breed to your dog!

Ooh, a one puppy litter. :frowning: That’s so hard! I know we have to plan for that sort of thing but what a bummer for everyone.

I’m not sure what I’ll do; we had two breedings planned, each of which I would have been happy to take a puppy - one I really wanted, one I “also” wanted (if I were insane to have that many dogs)…and now both bitches are not being bred (one was an emergency spay which is heartbreaking for her breeders, the other something else that we’re still investigating…but not looking good for me. :frowning: )

I never imagined being in this position. I’m probably too choosy but I had the ability to be so…not anymore.

Totally different question Houndhill - but do you use hypo-mating software? I need to start getting up to speed on this because I might have to make the choices now, rather than rely on breeders that I trusted enough to do it for me.

I haven’t done this. So, Fwiw, I would look for a slightly older bitch whose owner has already gotten her next generation/keeper bitch. Then you can have an idea of what the bitch produces.

Well, one puppy beats none! I have a three week old singleton now, a C-section puppy from a surgical frozen semen implant. She is precious in more ways than one!

I don’t think there is such a thing as being too choosy when it comes to accepting bitches for your stud dog! Good for you, you will not regret it.

I don’t even know what hypo-mating software is!

I’ll take a guess that it is pedigree software? If that is what you are talking about, I pay an annual fee to subscribe to a website that has all the IW pedigrees (most of them anyway in the US Canada, and Europe, UK, etc.) and Inbreeding Coeffiecients calculated to 10 generations. You can generate hypothetical breedings, and it will also spit out “common ancestors” for ten generations. It will also tell you all the offspring that dog has had, bred to which mates, etc. It is invaluable to me, so handy. I imagine other breeds have such a thing?

Yes, that would be ideal.

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. I will have to ask my breeder friends where they get theirs for our breed. I don’t think my breeder uses any but she also doesn’t breed very often. I feel like I need to personally have some knowledge about coefficients and not just trust other people to say “it’s a great match.”
