Another farm under siege article

“He doesn’t need this cow to survive and feed his family,” Sherriton told a reporter for FiOS1 news. “He puts a sob story on there. Please, tell him to go to Whole Foods and go get some antibiotic -free beef there.”

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Congratulations lady, you are a new low.

All of our sheep are named. I take pictures of them being adorable and post them on Facebook for my friends.

We are a little careful about what we name the meat animals. They don’t get names that are too inspired.

I have had some thoughtful conversations with people where I explain that male livestock animals especially have no real future except as meat. They usually cannot live together once they are mature unless they are castrated, or they will hurt each other, especially if females are nearby.

A new low for city people who think farming is a petting zoo, and people who raise animals to feed their families should shell out tons of money for so-called organic meat at the politically correct, overpriced gourmet grocery store. I guess these fools think the farmer should let his kids starve while the cow dies of old age, and the meat goes to waste.

I literally can’t stop laughing. Because the only major difference between “Minnie” and the cattle who are in the counter at Whole Foods is Minnie has a name, not an ear tag number.
It’s not funny, though. Literally thousands of people agree with her. Their disconnect is so great that they don’t think that shrink-wrapped beef in the store is not from what was once a living, breathing animal. Thousands of people. And they are publicly harassing and threatening this family about it.

Excellent point about the ear tag. This one has a name, all the other ones have numbers.

btw, the family moved the cow off the farm. Don’t know if it was to another property or to slaughter, but they announced the cow is gone and they will not answer any more questions about her.

OMG! This woman is ignorant and clearly fails to understand where all her factory farm food comes from.

Good for them. Glad to hear they did this.

While I think the protesters are silly I can also understand why they are upset. Giving the cow a name and portraying it in the way they did kind of asks for this response. It’s one thing for people to tour a farm and see how animals are used in our society as food, but naming it and having it appear to be a lovable pet??
I don’t understand your question. I would much rather that the cow that I get my meat from was treated humanely, name or not. And, I’m sure this cow was treated as a cow and not a pet like a dog or cat. But, being treated like a cow (should) means getting proper veterinary care, being kept clean and free from parasites, being fed and watered appropriately, having shelter, not being overcrowded or in a situation of fear, etc.

This crazy woman seems to have ASSUMED that the farmer was treating the cow like a pet just because she had a name and was living in an ideal environment. It’s a pity that people like her have such a visual platform with today’s social media.

Is there anywhere showing people that support this poor farmer? All I see in the news are people with “Save the Cow” news.

There are times when a “little white lie” concerning an animal is appropriate. Hopefully they (and others in the same situation) have learned from this.

You want them to say what?

I think it is great that this farm lets people see how a family farm runs. That includes raising animals for meat. What would a lie do? To me it would simply widen the gap between people who know where their food comes from and the people who do not.

Things like this is why I am cancelling our summer Dairy Day.

I’m just so done with ignorant people - especially because they have the ability to cause major problems through their malicious ignorance.

Well, I can understand that, so I don’t do it. I flat-out told my bosses, if we get pigs, I am not having anything to do with them until they’re dead and need to be butchered. I don’t want to get attached, and I will. I don’t even like pigs. So I don’t raise my own meat and I try to avoid thinking of food animals as anything but tag numbers. (Also helps in old-fashioned style farming. We already got the lecture that most of our chickens will be going the way of all historic farm chickens, which I’m fine with as long as I don’t have to kill them or pluck them, but there’s also the caveat of ‘if they live that long.’ We’re in a county park with raccoon, coyote, fox, weasel species, large hawks, owls…chances are we’re going to find some torn up or just gone. Such is farming.)

People are so ridiculous. I could almost understand if the lady who started it was vegan or something, but “buy your meat at whole foods” shows such a ridiculous lack of understanding that I almost can’t believe this is a real person.

Hi, vegan here, we don’t want her either.

And Minnie, before she is slaughtered, has a nice life.

A friend once opened her farm for a riding exhibition as part of a political fundraiser. She had very high-end horses, impeccably stabled. Well, lo and behold, one of the visitors called animal control for cruelty because she bedded on mats with shavings.

From their FB page it appears they are soldiering on and not closing the farm to visitors. It also looks like they have tons of support in the face of this idiocy. I hope they are rewarded with a flood of (good) visitors for what they’re dealing with. In the end maybe the morons protesting will end up causing even more people to become educated about where their food comes from.

At some point the legal system has to get serious about inciting a mob online and digital threats. Look at that poor woman who was harrassed by her ex and all the gamers. The police and courts did nothing for her. Or the Canadian kid who was sending SWAT to numerous houses on false pretenses and got away with it for years. It’s so easy to get a mob riled up these days, especially a mob of idiots apparently.

And unfortunately it seems that more and more people fall into that idiot category these days :sigh:
