Another fly sheet thread.. yet again..fly sheets and tall withers

I’ve got a collection of Horseware fly sheets from my horse who passed. They are not working for the new guy–of course!

The Amigo with belly band is far too tight in the shoulders. To be fair, it was also too tight on the other horse last year.

Rambo either just doesn’t fit this guy in the chest/withers or other horse stretched it out here or a combination of both. When I first put it on, it seems to fit fine, but it has a tendency to slide back and then the neck gets tight and it pulls on his withers. This horse has more of a shark fin type conformation, and while he’s got big shoulders, he’s not so broad in the chest.

When I first got my last horse, I had him in Weatherbeeta airflow, but I found that it stretched out easily and caused the same problems. I no longer have that sheet because I donated it for a discount on one of the Rambos.

New horse is a sensitive chestnut flower who hates the bugs and is prone to getting welts. The Rambo is also already making him sweat and it’s not even that hot out yet. He’s an 81 in Horseware but I think probably a 78 in some other brands.

Suggestions? Would the Rambo hoodie stay in place better?

The newer Weatherbeeta ripstop with the stretch panel at the withers?

Bucas? I heard the Bucas belly band runs small and this guy is a bit round at the moment.

Shires? If so, which one?

I know Smartpak at least used to make an integrated neck something with stretch panel, but the neck was so short, and if the Rambo neck is fitting short on this guy when it fit my brontosaurus horse ok, I think that’s a no.

The Rambo Optimo summer sheet isn’t really a fly sheet right–would he get sweaty?

There’s no padded wither model of any kind is there?

If you find one with a padded wither let me know! In the meantime I am using the Turtleneck fly sheet. Seems to Fit better on the withers for my narrow chested girl.

I have four horses, all very different body shapes. I have found that it is the material type that makes the difference. That soft mesh type is crap and will twist and pull back.
You have to get the more window screen like type.

I believe my tall withered horse is in this one right now, but I have to check https://www.doversaddlery.com/rambo-protector-fly-sheet/p/X1-24031B/
I also have this one for another horse, and I like this one a lot https://www.doversaddlery.com/wb-comfitec-ripshield-fly-sht/p/X1-240093/

I have a big chestnutwchestnut with a wide chest, tall withers, and odd shoulders so most blankets rub. I just bought him the Rambo protector and I love it! No rubs, his hives are going away, and so far he’s not sweating under it. I do live in South, so time will tell if it stays cool enough, but it’s done well up to 90* and humid so far.

Duplicate response sorry!

The Rambo Fly Buster is this kind of fabric and wasn’t working :frowning:

I did put the Protector on him today, but I didn’t stick around long enough to see if it shifted when he ate…tbd. Yes, I have a collection of fly sheets from my other horse–he would just start running in the afternoons in bug season without protection.

The best fit has been the Rambo Summer Series sheet (has some softshell material on the topline and softer mesh elsewhere), although the one I have is really a size too big. But while it was nice to not have a totally soaked horse the other day when he had it on out in the rain, this morning wasn’t that hot and he was already starting to sweat under it, so I switched to the Protector. All of those sheets are on extended backorder, so I can’t even get him one in his size if it wasn’t going to be too hot later on this summer.

I just saw this Schneider’s with VTEK which is supposed to be pressure relief for high withers. Any one try it?

Have you tried going up/down a size? Sometimes what they measure for isn’t actually the best fit. My high withered horse measures as a 75 but actually needs a 78.

He is kind of in between sizes, and these hand me downs are on the larger of the two (he’s between 78-81 depending on brand), and the Summer Series sheet is actually an 84 (runs small). I think he needs a tighter neck opening but enough room in the shoulder point to withers area.

Today the Protector seemed to do pretty well, although he managed to put a hole in the neck already. Maybe I can sell the Fly Buster and just get a back-up Protector. Why they fit differently, i don’t know.

I saw the Weatherbeeta breeze has the wither padding, but it’s only got one surcingle. If that fits anything like the Kool Koat version, it will twist all around.

The Kensington fly sheet would be perfect for what you describe

I use the Vtek on all of mine (used to use the Rambo Protector). I like the closed front, mosquito mesh surcingle one as the bellyband ones seem to fall to the left. I have several older horses with degrading toplines, and I feel it floats over the withers! The mosquito mesh is lighter weight than the texaline and wears much better than I expected.
