You don’t have to combine both names although people do that all the time. You could name your horse after either the sire or dam, or not at all. I try to name my animals after their personality and then figure out the registered name.

I’m assuming this is for AQHA due to the stud’s name. It’s pretty traditional for quarter horses to be named like this, with a combination of sire and dam’s names. Especially if the breeding is popular/well known.
