I have horse on Equishure but thinking about switching to Succeed. Has anyone used both and which worked best for your horse?
I can’t speak for the Succeed other than knowing that YMMV - every horse responds differently to it. Works for some, others not so much.
We have two horses on Equishure, both doing very well on it. One in particular who tends to be gassy - if he doesn’t get the Equishure, he becomes noticeably more gassy again.
What issues are you looking to use these for?
Iride, I want to keep hindgut ulcers at bay. Since my horse will need to live on omeprazole for the rest of her life I want to be sure she doesn’t develop hindgut ulcers because digestion in her stomach is limited.
You’re a good mom
Be sure to feed the Equishure and keep Sucralfate on hand (get from your vet) in case she gets gassy or has looser stools at any point. That, combined with the correct feed (safe starch or TC Sr, for ex), good turnout, and free choice access to hay (I like to feed a timothy/alfalfa mix) should go a long way. The best medicine is vigilence, and prevention
Iride, I feed 2# of Progressive RB and 2# Envision (fat supplement) a day divided up into 2 meals. Horse gets soaked hay when in and has a pile of it to last all night. She gets alfalfa before and after I ride and in hay bag in trailer. Also 5 tums before the bit goes in her, mouth. Sucralfate if I think she is worried about her GI tract or before an anticipated particularly stressful ride/lesson. The hay is soaked becaus it is really good grass hay and I am sure it has a high NSC content. My horse is a warmblood so prone to metabolic issues I imagine. Any other suggestions?
Rice Bran and a fat supplement will not provide the basic nutrition she needs. I’d either add a good ration balancer in, or the minimum serving per day (6 pounds usually) of a safe feed like Safe Starch, or Triple Crown Senior which has no grain in it (it’s mostly rice bran, beet pulp, fat, vitamins, etc)
Also, being a warmblood does not predispose her to metabolic issues per se.
I was looking into something to help with Hind Gut Ulcers just last week. Started my guy on Neigh-Lox Advanced, so far so good. I believe its much the same as Equishure.
After excessive research, I read a lot about Succeed, many are happy with it and see changes with it. I personally do not know, so can’t say for myself. My guy has been on the Neigh-Lox for 6 days now, I can’t say I see a huge difference, but he seems happier. I wish it was more obvious.
I debated between Equishure and Succeed for my OTTB. I chose Succeed because they offered a 60 day challenge with a money back guarantee. He’s on his last week of it and is doing GREAT. Others are right in saying YMMV. I had a very mixed review about Succeed but went ahead with the money back guarantee backing me up. I think it was $200 very well spent. He’s finishing up the week and then I am switching him over to SmartDigest Ultra which as a lot of the same ingredients at a much cheaper price, to maintain.
My horse had loose manure, very grouchy about touch, especially in his hind end, sucked up and tucked in look to his back half…now he’s rounded out and looking great, much more chipper about grooming his back half and touching. Worth a try…
Iride! When I said RB I meant ration balancer not rice bran. My horse’s mother is insulin resistant. The horse I’m refering to here will get fat deposits at her tail head, crest and shoulders if she is not in work and I don’t cut her feed.
I have kept my guy on Smart Digest Ultra and on a whim tried the Succeed for 2 months to see if his temperament improved. He was just grumpy. More nibbly, more ear flattening, etc. He did improve on the Succeed and the grumpiness definitely came back when we went back to the Smart Digest but it is expensive.
If metabolic issues are a concern, I’d go with either Equishure or RiteTrac. Succeed had oat flour, which might be a problem for some horses with metabolic issues.
I give RiteTrac to my old mare with EMS (IR and high leptin) without issues.
So I’ve had my guy on Neigh-Lox Advanced for a full week now. I did notice a difference, but just last night he farted and leaked. Which this stuff is supposed to also prevent
Which is making me think it’s not working enough.
I’m thinking of looking into Rite Trac, have him finish the neigh-lox but then switch him over.
I should’ve went with my gut, I originally was going to get Rite Trac. UGH!
