Looking for the anatomic girth that is really narrow behind the elbow (RIGHT below the buckles)
My new guy is about 15.2, so not really deep in the barrel. He is really narrow in the girth groove, and its really forward. Typical PRE, he has very well sprung ribs compounding the issue, and a big, long wither. And lets not forget the super shoulder movement.
Obrigado saddle fit to both us works well. Monoflap so cannot use a long girth.
Need a girth that works…
Saddle fitter suggested narrowest I can find. SO I search.
TIA
Well, the Fairfax narrow might work well. The narrow is narrower than the regular girth and made for a narrow girth groove. I can take measurements and send pictures if you want.
What about a softer girth, like mohair?
Amerigo has a few models that narrow a lot right below the buckles.
ETA: maybe this Kavalkade? https://hypostore.com/kavalkade-short-girth-casper.html
An out of the box idea might be a Stubben Equi-Soft depending on your horse’s size (the middle piece is the same for all girth sizes, so the strap-only part is longer on a larger size girth).
I am in the same boat with my Andi mare. Tho, she does not have a huge long wither.
One that I liked but need to get a smaller size is the Flex Rider Comfort Girth. They do have other styles and shapes. They also make them in leather, I prefer the squishy material for ease in cleaning it. I forgot to take in account the length beyond the buckles so it was fitting up almost under the saddle pad.
It is nice and squishy and the elastic seems to be nice and strong.
I have a fairfax… pretty sure its a narrow. I’ll see.
I have one, I’ll try, but the buckles are really unprotected (just one layer of leather) and they annoyed my other horse (the one I mentioned in the other girth post…). I did recently see a fleece buckle guard that looks like it might work…
This is What I am currently riding in…
@outerbanks77 thanks, I’ll take a look. The Amerigo brought me to some very interesting options! The Kavalkade looks like it’s narrow close to the middle. He is not deep in his barrel (just round), so that narrow part is well below the elbow. With my saddle I cannot use something longer which would probably solve the problem but…
Maybe just slip some padding around the buckles? I’d hate for you to sink money into it if it might not be the ticket
Have you tried the neoprene girths? I ride my PRE in the Kieffer. It’s actually my go to girth for a lot of horses.
@J-Lu, re the Flex Rider
Its the one I use, along with the Tapestry. The saddle fitter actually liked the Tapestry better, as it is narrower, but the really big center sternum pad is currently the problem (recall he has what I thought was a girth rub, but in fact it was a cut caused by his other front leg’s shoe nails or clip when he laid down, really forward under his chest. . ) The pad rubs on the edge of it. The Flex Rider doesnt have that big sternum pad.
Generally I like it, but just seeking alternatives.
I have two of these-- one with fleece and one with neoprene for my PRE/Lusis. The neoprene is great because it doesn’t slip forward over their “ate too many cookies” bellies. The buckles are set back enough to avoid the shoulder without the gaping issue that so many people had with the total saddle fit girths.
I did see that in the latest version of the neoprene one they took the keepers off?? Not sure where they were going with that. I try to shop used anyways.
