I do not understand how the effect of the best riders getting the better horses is removed from this calculation. When does correlation =causation, and when does it not?
I am not at all educated about statistics but some of you are.
Easy language in responses would be appreciated.
Those who are convinced that judging is crooked somehow might like this.
I remain convinced that judges always are fair and unbiased. (And remember I ride an Iberian, often a breed said to be “disliked” by judges). https://www.horsetalk.co.nz/2023/09/04/inadvertent-dressage-bias-judges-asked-impossible/?fbclid=IwAR2Ebk44UqJ5nXicZfWweLGkyjWy3MiBhbCMLaAKAD9pI2zLkNmkTXrTp8A_aem_AcYPAae0Y_WpJPuw1odDpfo4OnRSM251Mbnl4OOyJy2TnHwFTnesjvXVRMzPddtklC4&mibextid=Zxz2cZ
The article is focused on international competition and identifies an overall average 3 % gain in scores from “patriotism” when judge and competitor are from the same country. This is apparently in line with other sports.
I’m not sure how more precise judging criteria can change a patriotic bias. I’d assume making sure there is a mix of judges is the best way to go
Will read and get back. Have 3-day clinic that I’m focused on.
I am curious how much of what is identified as “patriotism” might be familiarity - you’re more likely to have seen a particular athlete for a long time if you are from the same country.
It’s still a form of bias of course.
tl;dr statistical analysis find humans are still human
