Another Kannan Question

So the recommendations for what kind of mare to breed to him say that it should be a small to medium sized mare. I have a 16.1 h fairly broadly built Dutch mare that competed at 1.40-145 m that I am considering him for. She is by Palfrenier (Joost x Aniki x Kassander) out of a Gentleman mare. She has lots of go to the jumps. I really want to breed her to a Voltaire son as I think the Joost, Voltaire cross has been a good one.

So I’m not sure if the recommendations are for height or body size of mare. I’m also considering Valentino and Concorde.

Any thoughts .

By all accounts he is much better suited to a blood mare.
I have seen a few chunky monkeys lovely but probably lacking a bit of sparkle

I rode several Kannans while riding in Europe (two stallions, one gelding and a mare) and I found that they were relatively large in either height and/or substance (body type) or both. They all shared in common very good rideability and all had lovely temperaments but could have all used some more refinement and blood.

Here are photos and videos and pedigree information about one of the Kannan stallions (known around the barn as “Nemo”) that I had the opportunity to ride while in Europe.

He had the fantastic rideability and temperament, however he was no beauty queen. Although was approximately 17h (still growing as a then 4 year old), was substantial and had quite a long back behind the saddle with a slightly short neck for his body. Despite his lack of classic beauty, it was clear that he was capable for the upper levels of show jumping as he went on to prove.

Thanks for the info Sakura. Although it’s always easier to sell a pretty horse, they all look pretty when they are jumping a big track well:)

We used to have a mare by Palfrenier x Ladalco x Joost from the Dermie damline, she has produced a 1.60m jumper by Kigali and the breeder that bought her bred her to Converter, one of which was approved both in Ireland and Germany. The colts were very blood type and very beautiful.

There seems to be a dichotomy between the types that often succeed at inspections and the ones that succeed at the top of sport. We think Tim Stockdale’s horse looks like a very good jumper type despite any apparent flaws in conformation or type (ie, being pretty enough). Kannan being Voltaire and Nimmerdor will cross well with Alme lineage as these crosses are already proven in international show jumping…Big Star, Bubalu, etc. And Kannan has produced Nino des Buisonnetts second in WC Finals and Gold in London in 2012 . Nothing more to say!
