Another New Horse - It's Bo!

already looking so much better! Still eagerly waiting for the dentist appointment report to get some answers on age and why his is missing some of his molars. Glad he luvs his purina senior.

I suspect there is residual adhesive from his auction tag, see the original pics, grabbing on to the dirt

It’s probably the same clay ball that just won’t come out. That stuff has to dry and be crushed out.

Hoopoe, looks like you are right–I hadn’t gone all the way back to the first pictures (and when I did, Holy Cow, what a difference!)

I can see why they have to do it, but it really is kind of adding insult to injury to cement that label in place!

Me too :joy: trailer repairs taking longer than planned due to parts/weather and now the upcoming holiday.

@atr, hoopooe is right - it’s the adhesive left over from the tail tag, I haven’t gotten around to removing it. My last one didn’t have nearly as much stuck on him but this one will need some goo gone or something. He does regularly apply a generous coating of mud to his head, though!

He’s a big bodied horse, that’s for sure. He looks like he has enough bone to support himself.
He’ll look even better after he’s ready to meet the farrier.

Well done you @Heinz_57! Well done.

:raising_hand_woman: I am the trimmer. He didn’t come with a lot of foot (and its all run forward and flared), so its a work in progress. I can’t take any more toe right now. With proper nutrition will come more and better growth! And hopefully some sole depth. He’s comfortable and sound now but there’s just not much to work with yet.

I took for granted that farriery will be an involved process that he will have to be eased into.
I’m so very impressed with what you’ve done. :+1:

Thank you! The feet will probably be the longest wait of all to see substantial changes, but he is an excellent patient. A thing for which I am grateful after I work on my other two knuckleheads

More pics will be taken today, I will be out preparing for the insane weather shift that is rolling in this afternoon - and that includes putting additional blankets on everyone to manage the ‘feels like’ low temp of 0° predicted for overnight (14° with 20-30mph winds, gusts up to 45mph). It is usually about 5° colder at my house than where the weather station is in town, so I’m anticipating the feels like to actually be in the negatives.

I’m really, really glad I’ve been able to pack a significant amount of weight on Bo in the last 4.5 weeks because I really don’t know if he would’ve survived these temps in his original condition.

Yeah… I’m glad he has a chance now.

Me too.

I failed on pics. The wind started up early and by the time I got to Bo it was too cold to make him stand naked, and he wasn’t really having it anyway. All I got was this :

I’m feeling pretty impressed with all the boys today, everyone stood like a rock for their turn at wardrobe changes despite the gusting cold, flapping blankets and their friends acting like crazy fools on the other side of the fence. Several times the blankets ended up on ME and not the horse thanks to the wind

I love the mud on his face, ears, etc. Looks like he got a good enjoyable roll (clearly behind his ear was itchy!). Sounds like he is acting more and more like a proper horse!

For sure. He decided his face was itchy and vigorously rubbed his head on my arm while I was bundling him. And gave me a dirty look for putting the big turnout blanket back on.

I’m a little worried about him right now, it’s about 15° with an easily 0° wind chill (20-30mph!) and he’s not cold per se, but he’s not as toasty as I’d like him to be. It’s supposed to continue to drop a couple more degrees through the night and the wind is murderous.

I’ll be going back out at midnight-1 to give him a 5th meal, bust ice again and check everyone to see if I need to add more layers. I’ve got two more 100g’s if needed.

Oh, and our pipes are frozen.
