Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Gotta love the stock horse breeds for packing on the pounds effortlessly overnight-- it seems

Are you sure he is quite as old as the vet thought? Like you said maybe he is younger with bad teeth.

All we know for certain is he’s not super young  I’m guessing he’s in his teens, but I suspect we will never really know with any certainty.

Weren’t you going to take him to the dentist? They should at least know which of his tooth issues are due to age and which are due to other causes. That should help with age estimation by his teeth.

Yes, still waiting on trailer repairs to happen. Even then, aging by teeth is not a science and opinions can vary wildly from vet/dentist to vet/dentist.

That’s why I said “estimate.”

and that’s why I said “with any certainty”.

He looks so much better!

I have to say, I’ve never seen a horse with such deep supraorbital fossas.

It’s beyond me to understand how people can be so cruel to animals. He’s so lucky to have found you.

I haven’t either, but they are sloooowly filling in, like his topline. He’ll have fat on his head before you know it. I think he should hit peak condition right about the time he sheds out completely, so that should be fun.

Another week and we’re still chugging along  This is 8 weeks from day 1. He’s got that wet look going because I had to liberally douse him with fly spray (at his request). He’s got a hairless patch on his sternal area the flies congregate around, that makes me wonder if he might have had problems with sweet itch or another allergy in the past. He’s also starting to molt around the face, shedding season is coming!!

You might try neem oil on that hairless patch. It’s a natural insect repellant and good for skin and coat.

He’s looking good!

That’s an absolutely shocking transformation. You should be very proud of yourself, knowing all of the work that has gone into transforming this shockingly thin yet picky eater. He is so lucky to have found you!

I wonder what Bo thinks when you keep pulling his tail away for the Butt Shot
My guess is as long as FOOD is involved, he’ll tolerate your “kink” :sunglasses:

the bare spot on the sternum / chest may also from pressure of fatless, bony body against the ground. Time may fi that issue

He is used to the paparazzi. Just make sure to get my good side. :sunglasses: I try not to pull the tail so far aside that he is fully exposed though

The only thing he strongly objects to is me trying to put blankets on him lately - the very sight of one gets mean looks, and if I dare to actually put it ON he tries to bite me, bite it, and when I scold him he just bites the air instead. I haven’t quite figured out why it’s so offensive, but we’ll work on it. It started towards the end of that deep freeze we had, and I assumed he was probably a little body sore from layers and heavy blankets 24/7. Once the weather warmed back up I left him naked for a couple weeks to decompress, but when I had to blanket him last week for a low 30’s overnight the teeth came back out. Once it’s on, he’s fine with it :woman_shrugging: and it doesn’t matter if it’s a light sheet or a blanket with fill, they all make him angry. Taking it off doesn’t seem to upset him though. Ulcers are, of course, also on the radar as a possible cause.
