Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Great news! Good Bo(y)!

So a thought…remember when you said that he was following you around and “trying to tell you something”? Maybe he was a still a little poozily feeling and the rabies vaccine tipped his body over the edge.

Either way, he sounds a little delicate about vax in general. But you wouldn’t know that until you vaccinated him.

Yes, he is. I did his series for the core vax (tetanus, flu/rhino, EEE/WEE, WNV) myself, and he had side effects but they were manageable. Fever (103.3 at one point), loss of appetite, swelling at the site that all lasted 3-5 days. At the time I assumed it was maybe just that particular brand of vaccine, and made a mental note to use a different one next time around. The first round I gave in the neck and ended up having to elevate his food and water the next day, he was unable to put his neck down for a day or two. The second round I switched to the pectoral muscle, and he struggled with lifting the leg on that side when walking but at least he was able to eat and drink comfortably.

Ironically, that product was also manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim, and was one I hadn’t used before - the Prestige vaccines, made by Merck, are my usual go-to but they were out of stock everywhere I looked.

Any updates on the hind leg lameness?

Ok, minor setback.

About the time the went to start getting him prepped to go home, he’s developed diarrhea. So, they want to keep him another night and try to get that under control and then send him home tomorrow. Just got off the phone, I had ridden and was about to put my tack away and hook up the trailer.

So, a little deflated about that BUT he still gets to come home, just not yet.

@starsandsun it hasn’t been mentioned. I’m suspecting (and hoping) that it was a localized reaction to getting the rabies shot in that hamstring, but we’ll see when I see him tomorrow.

Good to leave him there, diarrhea is nothing to be cavalier about, unless you are sure you know what is going on, which seems they don’t know yet.
Our vets consider diarrhea of unknown origin a red flag, could become serious in a few hours in a horse, too serious to take chances.
At the track decades ago any horse with diarrhea saw a vet immediately, just in case.
Diarrhea can have many transient and unimportant reasons, but the few that could make it serious are not worth taking a chance and waiting it out without a vet on hand.

Bet you will be glad when there are no more worrisome surprises.
Jingles you and Bo will have a ton of good things come your way. :sunglasses:

It could likely be attributed to any of the variety of meds he’s been on, the no food for 36 hours and the reintroducing it, etc. but given his recent brush with dehydration, I definitely want to make sure he’s in good shape before he comes home.

If he’s just started eating again that could explain the diarrhea.

Oh no I’m sorry to hear this update. I am sure leaving him there is the right thing to do just in case.

I’m sure they want to prevent him from becoming dehydrated again.

Poor Bo! But it’s good to keep him within easy reach of the vets till they’re sure he’s ok.

Sending some additional overnight jingles!

Sorry. Apparently we were posting at the same time. :upside_down_face:

This morning’s :poop: update…

Bo is now withholding poop. :expressionless: He has not passed anything since yesterday afternoon, in spite of continuing to eat and ultrasounds showing that he’s got good gut movement. He cannot come home until he produces a normal poop. I will be waiting by the phone for a poop call. In all other ways, he is cleared to go home so we are literally just waiting for him to produce a normal pile. :woman_facepalming:

MAKE :poop: Bo, MAKE!

Are they hand walking him? That might help?
