Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Snail shell, yes. It was unrelated to the poop, just nearby

OK! Phew!

Can you get Elmo to instruct Bo in “look, I don’t know what you used to have to do, but in this family, here is what we consider edible”? Bo’s perception of this seems miscalibrated.

In his Previous Life, poor Bo decided dirt & gravel was edible.
Then he goes to @Heinz_57 & just as he’s figuring out what to order from her menu… BAM!
Off he goes to Horsy Solitary… Where bedding seems preferable to what was on their menu :frowning:
As Cool Hand Luke discovered:
"What we have here is a failure to communicate :sunglasses:

@Heinz_57 Hoping that new feed proves to be The Answer :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::pray:

He’s scarfing down the new feed wonderfully. I have also been giving him a small pile of alfalfa to poke through 2x a day, hoping maybe he can get some bits of it down in between meals. He’s been behaving himself and eating his “real” meals, not just fixating on quidding hay, so we’ll keep that up unless he starts losing interest in his grain. He’s also grazing like a fiend. No shortage of things to roll around in his mouth here!

Bringing him home was 100% the right choice, thank you all for the support on that. He’s happy, he’s moving around, and he’s eating with enthusiasm.

You are good people, @Heinz_57. I’ve been following Bo’s saga along with everyone else, and it makes me so happy to to read about how happy and safe he feels at your place, and how kindly and thoughtfully you’re caring for him.

Yes…really interesting stuff. I had a quite distressing find with my horses poop last July.

Yes, that is blood and she probably had 5 of these incidents between discovery and getting her to the vet. She would put out a few normal looking poop balls then a squirt of blood. I had to go back home to get the truck so it was probably 3 hours from discovery to the vet. Thank goodness I took pictures because by the time we got to the vet, not so much as 1 drop of blood. Her exam was negative for masses (I was concerned as she is an older gray with the requisite melanomas and was worried about an internal one) or tears. The best the vet could come up with was a hemorrhoid! Only my horse . She had just a bit of old blood show up in the overnight poop then thankfully, absolutely nothing like it since.

Thank you. I am just doing the best I can for him, really. I have plucked so many horses out of the gutters over the years, but it never gets old watching them bloom.

@Kyrabee oh my! That would be frightening. I’m glad it turned out to be minor in the end!

Poops checked today still had some flakes of shavings, but less than yesterday so hopefully he’s clearing the last of them out. He’s still eating (YAY), still drinking and has been moving around the pasture a good bit. He looks pretty lively. And he’s started talking at mealtimes again.

What a happy update! So glad he is home with you and getting the best of care. You’re an amazing and loving person. Bo is so blessed you found him. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I love this thread and checking in on Bo every day. You might want to consider a week of psyllium considering all the rocks, gravel and shavings that are in his gut. It might help move some of it along.

Stretching the legs today…

He was energetic, although not quite as ‘yeehaw!’ as the last few weeks, understandably. Still recovering and all that. He seemed happy to get out and do a little ‘work’ to earn his keep though.

Good Bo.

He is kind of a conundrum. His body and gaits in no way look like he is in his 20’s but his head does.

I am so glad he is progressing after this last episode.

He’s got some real reach through that shoulder, hasn’t he? And he looks like he’s tracking up nicely.

A bit of activity is probably just the ticket for him now.

I don’t think he will look quite so old in the face once he’s all shed out and fattened up. But I agree - if he truly is 20 something, he isn’t showing it. I watched him roll this morning, and he gets up and down with the same agility as my 8 year old. I suspect that will only improve as he gets fitter and stronger.

And, today is Monday, so I’ll be back later with our regularly scheduled programming for a picture update!

I’m so glad he’s home. He looked so happy in the new videos to be in his place! I’m sure it’s alarming to see him lose any of his weight, but he doesn’t look to much worse for the wear. Shavings though, Bo? Really?

He is definitely grateful I broke him out of jail.

12 weeks today, I think we’ve halted the weight loss and will hopefully be back on the weight gain train soon. In person, he looks markedly better than he did a week ago. Once he’s up to full rations, a couple more weeks and he should be right where he needs to be weight-wise. He’s looking a little slim around the top yet, you can see the hint of ‘shelf’ along the top of his ribcage in the side-on photo and his hips/croup are a little more peak-y.

But oh my gosh, the mischievous twinkle in that eye! I think we have Bo back, everybody :grinning:
