Another New Horse - It's Bo!

Yikes! Although my gelding sliced open a foot and half of shoulder on a fence once. Gotta love them.

ETA: My barn owner called me and said “Gatsby’s fine. The vet is on the way. He’ll need a couple of stitches.” I was 45 minutes away. I got there just before the vet. BO had gotten him from the field into his stall. I went in the stall, looked at the shoulder, came back out and looked at the BO. My exact words: “A couple of stitches?” She said she didn’t want to panic me for my drive out there.

Off topic: but that reminds ME of when I moved 1,100 miles away to be a working student. I called my sister and said: “Call mom and dad. Tell them I am ok.” She asks “What’s wrong?” I said “The farm just got hit by a tornado. But I’m ok.” And then the cell towers went down… But I got the important part out!

You’re a good daughter! Thank goodness you got through. Can’t imagine their panic if you hadn’t.

We have four horse with striped hooves, I don’t think it is appaloosa thing.

Reminds me of the time my Trainer/BM called me at work (1h+ from the barn).
His 1st words:
“Your horses are okay”
Next:
“We had a fire” :scream:

Turned out it was the haybarn, some 200’ from the stalls, that had burned.
Metal building, burned to the ground in the 20min it took the FD to arrive.
Hay had been put up wet.
Staff < using the term loosely :rage:, recalled smelling “something” for about a week before the fire :persevere:

We also have a Smart Little Lena grandson with four white socks and stripy feet. No Apps in his pedigree.

Wow, that’s scary. So glad the fire didn’t spread.
I do appreciate that, when calling me, my BOs over the years always started the conversation with “(Horse name) is okay.”

Unless it was the 4 a.m. “Gatsby is colicking.” In that case, I made my 45 minute drive to the barn in 34 minutes. No traffic on the 101 Freeway and luckily no police either.

Oh, thank God you looked & got it out. My childhood/teenhood horse had something similar happen and (long story short) we lost him. So I am so glad you caught yours and didn’t have the same ending.

I am a tad bit obsessive about checking the horses over whenever I’m outside, and thoroughly investigating any injuries. When I had to board for a couple months last summer while we moved, the lack of observation skills by the BM drove me bonkers - Elmo hurt himself three or four times, twice was lame over it, and she was always like ‘Oh, I didn’t notice!’. :woman_facepalming: I swear she did turn out/in with her eyes closed, but she was flaky from the start and I absolutely could not find anywhere else that would take short term boarders.

Bo is continuing to do well, he’s pretty much at 100% of his normal rations and he’s back to shark-attacking the blankets with a vengeance. I understand his rage and I leave him naked as much as possible, but sometimes the weather dictates otherwise. :grimacing:

I just can’t tell you the relief I felt when you said you got it out ok. Three professionals looked at my horse and wouldn’t even do an xray because they were so certain there wasn’t anything in it. My mom found the chunk of wood with a knife after he died ten days later. I didn’t trust vets for a while.

Glad to hear Bo is back to his usual shenanigans!

have you tried some static guard on the blankets just in case? I suspect his reaction is a trigger response to bad handling in the past.

You know, you had me feeling like I had a horse on self care board again for awhile there. Checking on him every day AM and PM. Glad he’s moved past me worrying and doing that😀

Apologies for my absence, I have some devilish cold-sickness and I spent the weekend trying to rest enough to get rid of it.

That said, it’s Monday! 13 weeks. He’s put a little weight back on, slowly but surely. Still a few more pounds to go, mostly over the topline. The weather all week is supposed to be highs in the low 80s, so I hope to give him a good bath soon. He’s very itchy with all the shedding and he was begging for some attention when I was taking pictures.

(He’s not standing square here, his shoulders aren’t actually that lopsided!)

I may have mentioned this … I have my vets pull blood to run titers before any vaccines. I just got the one back for rabies - it’s the very same level he was at last year right after they did the rabies vaccine (from which he colic-ed badly).
