Another one: suggestions for AHS-approved stallion for hunter foal

I’ve got a 6yo maiden mare that I’m considering breeding this spring, but I’m really at a loss on who to use for her.

She’s AHS registered and approved, so want a stallion that’s approved for AHS as well.
Due to maiden status and expense, I am only considering fresh/cooled at this time. No frozen.
I’d be breeding for a dual use or hunter foal. It would be a keeper, but needs to be marketable as well, in case my situation changes.

Mare’s breeding is Bliss MF x Juventus/TB dam.
The mare is small and compact (about 15.3), and slightly downhill. I want something to increase size, length, and substance. She’s pretty and refined, but I’d like to add in some bone and uphillness.
Movement on the mare is great–lovely trot, lopey canter, and demonstrated good form over small jumps last year. I don’t want to take away, but adding hack-winning movement isn’t a priority, and I’d rather have a great jump.
I’m a DIY amateur so temperament is critical. Mare is naturally quiet and not spooky, but pretty bitchy with other horses. I don’t want a stick and spur ride, but good brain is the most important criteria of all.
Color is least important, though I love one with lots of chrome.

Thanks for any recommendations or input!

I’d check out Ut Major de Brecey. I’m not sure if he is currently AHS approved but his owner was interested in getting it down and I spoke with the AHS when I was looking at using him last year and his pedigree and performance record was given the all-clear. He produces nice hunter and jumper types and has a fantastic temperament and rideability. I spoke to the rider who had him in Europe as well, before his current rider, and everyone said how great he was and how much confidence he gave them.

Additionally, I believe you might be able to get KWPN papers for a foal that is out of a Hanoverian approved mare and by an KWPN approved stallion, although I’d double check with them on that, and you might have AES, ZANG, and NAS registration options for the foal as well as long as you use a WBFSH studbook approved stallion, which might open up some of your stallion options if you just want to ensure there are some registration options for the foal and you aren’t committed to AHS specifically.

AHS also administers the Rhineland studbook in the US so there are some additional stallions available to Hanoverian approved mares. (A foal by a Rhineland approved stallion out of a Hano approved mare can be registered in the Rhineland book. AHS treats Rhineland registered mares the same as Hanoverian registered mares when presented for approval.)

These are the Hanoverian and Rhineland activated stallions for 2022 There are buttons at the top of the page to sort by AHS stallions, Rhineland stallions, and jumper program stallions.

BTW, the Hanoverian and Rhineland Stallion Service Auction ends on 2/5

Lordanos and Qaterback come to mind immediately for marketability.

I see Schroeder is in the AHS SSA. I really like his kids, but no experience with them as hunter foals. I’ve seen several local that have all been good eventers and nice movers.

I am not sure where he is standing these days, if he is standing at all, but Sir James might be worth a look. I have a filly who sounds exactly like what you want out of your mare and that is her sire. People stop me at paces and shows to ask me her breeding. She does come from an incredible female family though so he can’t take all the credit.

Dreamscape Farm has several hunter sires. A Lordanos son, a Lordanos grandson, Valentino, and several others. Most are approved AHS.

I ended up going with Checkmate with Dreamscape farm. I wanted size as my mare is 15.3 and very typey, she is a great jumper and mover and did very well in the limited hunter showing she had. AHS is great at answering any questions about different stallions that are approved. I called and made sure Checkmate was approved in US as he doesn’t show up on their lists.

Check out Lord Adonis, great hunter type , jump and movement, Lordanos has been suggested, sire of Horse of the year Big Shot as well as Million $ GP winner. LA is a great fresh option to use a winning pedigree with rocket fuel semen, easy to handle and super cute character

I love Lordanos and would use him if I was considering frozen. I’ve looked into his sons, and do like Lord Adanos. I adore Checkmate, and tried using him last year but no successful pregnancy.
Along those lines, I’d LOVE to find a stallion that stands somewhere in the south/middle of the east coast. Of 5 breeding attempts in 2021, FedEx screwed me THREE times, with shipments arriving over 24 hrs late. Either missed the mare or the quality was no longer good.
While not a deal breaker, I’d love to find something in the mid atlantic or SE area that I can physically drive to pick up. I lost a LOT of money last year due to FedEx and I’m not excited to play that game again. Perhaps GK Calucci or one of the other Hilltop stallions would be a good match.
