I understand the authorities being overly cautious on this one, especially when you think of the numerous heads of state presently in the City for the U.N. meeting. It may very well be an accident – and a horrible one – but we really won’t know for awhile. I’m going to try to stay away from speculative reports for the meantime.

Airbus Industrie (yep, that’s how they spell it) has wonderful planes with very difficult pilot override problems. The computer system makes is almost impossible for a pilot to take over certain actions.

If you are taking off and you have already reached the point of no return on the runway - where you are going to fast and have not enough runway to abort - you must take off. This could have been something similar to the piece of metal flying up into Concorde’s engine in Paris, it could have been a bird or any other catastrophic mechanical failure. Please, let’s wait for the results before jumping to any conclusions.

…i used to keep my horse about 12 blocks away…

Anyone from Queens? Right now thinking of the people there before speculating about other things/wondering/worrying/fighting. Remember before you start fighting with someone over something, we all respond/react differently under stress, most of us get tense and angry/upset.

I am sitting in my high school library and I am watching CNN and there are blocks of homes ablaze completely. High schoolers like me are glancing at the pictures on the tv and we see these homes and we think about our homes and the people and pets we love who might be in them.

Thoughts/Prayers not only to the passengers and crew of this flight and their families, but also to the families who lost loved ones/their homes today (I am hoping there will be no causalities from the fires… ) and to the police, fire, and EMS workers who have faced so many difficult things lately.

They found the black box and it is on it’s way to DC for anaylsis. Hopefully this will tell us what happened. It’s sad, but I’m really praying that this is an accident. It’s so scary watching this on the news. All the houses on fire. It looks just like my neighborhood. I’m again hugging Ethan tighter today. (and my hubby too).

“I’m proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free, and I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I’ll gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today, cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, god bless the USA”

It was an Airbus going to Dominican Republic (Flight 587).

I can’t turn on the TV cuz my 4 year old son is with me, and I don’t want him to get scared. Does it seem like an accident, not a hijacking?

Use the Force.

Closing the airspace is common sense, not an overreaction. Resources needed at the crash site would be unavailable in the event of another accident, even a small one.

It’s probably just a typical accident but I don’t blame them for closing the airports. I’m still flying home for thanksgiving under the idea that when it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go. But then i also don’t go through NY or BWI or any of that. I do go through Atlanta, but that doesn’t seem to be too concerning.

American Airlines Airbus taking off to the Dominican Republic–initial reports.

Fighter jets were not notified or given prior warnings of problems

I flew into NY yesterday and I was not scared because I will not allow myself to be.

Please don’t think that NY is unsafe. It is safe.

My husband is a cop and is posted at the UN which was evacuated…so maybe those meetings are on hold…and now where he is is on lockdown…

Better safe than sorry.

Some are implying an earlier “explosion”, speculating a bomb. The engine is a few blocks from the rest of the wreckage. They say there are therefore 2 crash sites.

All bridges and tunnels to NYC are closed (all according to CNN).

Just heard that the elementary schools for the Queens area are off today because of Veteran’s Day…

Everyone is hoping there were no older children left home alone for day in the area. They are going door to door. Firemen said on t.v. they are worried that a child might lock the doors and hide under the bed (or something) out of fear. Urging all parents in the area who’s children might be home alone to call police immediately.

Just heard a radio report on the way home; press conference with Guiliani and Pataki. They said the it is “believed” (not confirmed?) that the pilot dumped fuel over Jamaica Bay before the “explosion” (most witnesses are reporting that the plane broke apart before nosediving downward) which they say suggests that the pilot knew there was a problem of some sort.

The whole thing, accident or not, is just awful.
