I hope someone here has experience with Fryso saddles. My Friesian is a keg on legs, no withers. I have an XW Albion SLK low head, the pommel is about 5 inches above his withers, one can see daylight between the panels, but the panels do contact his back well. I am currently riding in a vintage Wintec Isabelle with the XW gullet installed. It is also pommel high, but not as bad as the low head Albion. My dream saddle is a BC Vinici, Which I believe comes in both hoop and traditional trees, but a couple of Fryso’s have come up in my search too. Fryso’s have a different tree sizing arrangement, the ones available are #4 and #5. It is hard to visualize, looking at photos, if one will work for his back. Oh, and I am also hundreds of miles from tack shops. His tracings look like they were made with a pizza pan, no rise for withers.
While a hoop tree fits those barrel shaped horses so well, In my experience using one on my own " keg with legs" was that I had to girth it up TIGHT to keep it stable enough to launch myself on…
She hated that but went really well in the saddle . Getting on even using a mounting block was dicey. I sold the saddle after 6 successful years and went with a normal type tree and we are doing well. At 18 now she actually does have withers
So I would advise trying to find something other than a hoop tree or demo one first to make sure it works for you .
Duett makes saddles for that type of conformation, does remote fitting, has a generous trial policy and has a multitude of panel and tree options to get you just the right fit. I love mine. I don’t have any issues with the saddle slipping when I mount and I’m pretty heavy.
Thanks, I will look into them again. I hear great things about the customer service.
They were super to work with. I ordered mine custom and it was a great experience. After I took delivery of the saddle, I also did a remote flocking adjustment and was very impressed.
I just got a hoop tree XXW Detente for my Friesian cross, and I’m not quite regretting it but a little sad. It’s so so wide - my mare’s wither tracing was so round that my fitter suggested even a treeless saddle (ugh. no). The chart was basically a rainbow - completely flat semi circles. It does fit her so much better than a normal tree, but I feel like I’m doing the splits now.
I am tall(5’11”) with wide hips and long femurs and I can’t imagine a smaller person riding in it! I am hopeful that I’ll find something that both fits her and has a slightly more narrow twist. I know a truly narrow twist probably won’t be possible. Maybe I’ll get used to it?
The shape really fits her though so your mileage may vary. I can’t say she is going a lot better in it, but it does need a reflock. I am thinking when she’s a bit stronger and older (just turned 6), I’ll get a fully custom tree for her with more choice on twist, etc.
Patrick and Lovatt & Ricketts are two other brands with hoop trees you might check out. I have a Patrick Leggero XW on their cob tree and like it quite a bit (I also have a Vinici in a W hoop tree; the Leggero is a wider twist for sure).
Popping back in to say I have the Duett Fidelio on the regular hoop tree. I understand the twist on it is narrower than their other models. I demo’d a Fidelio with their H&C hoop tree and I couldn’t put my leg on to save my life; I presume the twist was a lot wider on that one.
I had a Duett Tango and I loved the saddle and it was comfortable and put me in the right position.
Just to add on to this: tonight I tossed my Vinici on my 17H warmblood, who I usually ride in the Patrick. I was surprised to find that I was able to sit her trot more easily despite the much smaller/softer thigh blocks. I think it’s because of the twist, even though I feel comfortable in the Patrick and have pretty good hip flexibility. So when I get my other horse sold, the Vinici might end up being my permanent saddle, and the Patrick will be up for sale.
I don’t remember which Duett dressage model I trialed back in they day, but it’s the one saddle I rejected within about two minutes of sitting on it. Felt like a board sitting up above the horse.
Fairfax saddlery also makes wide enough saddles and they make an option called the Elias tree which was built for friesians and their very uphill build.
Loxley has a hoop tree and a brand new baroque tree which is even rounder, try them.
Yes, but even thought their trees/gullets to fairly wide, their still rather A shaped vs U or hoop shaped. I actually tried the Elias on my PRE previously and it wasn’t bad, but he had a more prominent withers. It wouldn’t work for a more rounded or propane tank type. It did work for my PRE due to this uphill build, but again, withers.
Well last summer, I was sold the Lovatt & Ricketts hoop tree saddle for my wide warmblood and it truly was barrell shaped and way to wide and u shaped for my horses. You might try that. I really liked that saddle because even though it was shaped to fit a barrel, it had a nice twist on it and was very comfortable. If you go through Adrienne Hendricks, you can get all kinds of customizing.
