Another Saddle thread.......Anyone have a Crosby Prix St. George??

So I am still in search of an affordable but decent dressage saddle. I found a used Crosby Prix St. George for a good price. I haven’t found too much info on them and only ONE review.

Anyone have any opinions on them?? Do they generally seem to fit riders/horses well??

The one review I read said it put the rider in a bad position. Looking for other experiences to consider.

Thanks.

I used to ride in one and it didn’t feel too bad to me. However, the channel was very narrow and aggravated the horse’s back, so it didn’t last long in the barn. You might want to see how wide the channel is on this saddle and compare to what you are riding in now.

I had a Crosby Prix St Georges that I bought new in about 1995. It was called a ‘Sof-Ride’. I don’t know if Crosby still uses that descriptive phrase or not. I think it referred to the specially-tanned leather on the seat which was pretty cushy. I used it on my narrow old TB X who had ski slope withers and pronounced swayback. He was quite comfortable in it and I absolutely loved riding in it. It had a medium tree, though, and did not begin to fit the wide-load Hafligers that followed the TB so I sold it on eBay in 2002. :frowning:

I have a Crosby PSG Sofride. It is so comfy! and my horse just adores it. Mine is a medium tree used on a narrow TB.

i have one… and i cant bear to part with it… even though im mostly a WP rider with dressage roots, i still LOVE the dressage. i hardly use it, but i will never part with it…

i LOVE LOVE LOVE mine!

I had one, and I loved it–until a scatty minded mare reared up, flipped over and broke the tree.

I have one, a BROWN one! I bought it because I’m sort of transitioning from hunterland to eventerland, and I decided I needed to get serious about the dressage thing, but was on a budget. Hence old, used, brown Crosby.

My dressage trainer (who’s ridden in just about everything, from crap to super fancy custom saddles) absolutely loves it. There’s not a whole lot of padding holding you in place like newer saddles, so you actually have to work at it, and it fits my TB pretty well in a medium tree

Thanks for all the replys everyone! Very helpful.

I did notice that it looks like the channel of the saddle was narrower than my jumping saddle (BdH). I really don’t know if that will cause a problem or not for my horse, it may. The other thing I’m worried about is whether or not the saddle will be too narrow for my horse. He has some withers but a pretty wide back. The BdH fits him fine but that saddle has fit an amazing amount of horses. I guess if the price ends up being really reasonable even if it doesn’t work out I can always resell it huh??

thanks again!

crosby used to flock with foam which makes the saddle unadjustable, does anyone know if they are now using wool?

Hey! Holly has a dressage saddle for sale - and I can’t remember the kind now but maybe try it out next time you are out there  Aaaahhhhh… saddle shopping.

I had an older one (late 80s?–it was 2 tone!!)–a softride also.

It had cracks in the seat which is pretty common for the model (I know several people who have similar cracked models), but they didn’t worsen in the 10 years or so I had it, and made it a very cheap saddle for me to purchase, so I can’t really complain. Mine was foam flocked and it was a tad narrow in the gullet.

As for position, it probably varies by person–it wasn’t great for me, but it wasn’t terrible. It was very soft, comfy, could ride in it for hours. It was very much like an A/P saddle with straight flaps, which can make you tend toward a chair seat. I’ve had better luck with those that more aggressively “put” you into a dressage position (love my KN!) but that is as much a personal failing as one of the saddle–left to my own devices my eventer tendencies come out.

So, my review is kinda neutral. Neither the best nor worst dressage saddle (for me) that I’ve owned.

Oh really? Thanks for the heads up:winkgrin:

This saddle has a very deep seat, so people no doubt either love it or hate it. The channel is quite narrow, and I have only seen them foam flocked.

I had one. It was fine to ride in, but the medium tree was somewhat narrow, and the gullet was very narrow. The fit was excellent on a fineboned TB, but I would not think it would fit well on a larger TB or a warmblood–even if the width was correct I think the gullet would be too narrow.

I have a prix st George for sale

I have a brown prix st George. I love it! I bought a new saddle for my watmblood and no longer need it. It is a 17.5 med/ narrow tree fits great on high withered thoroughbreds and has the cc feel of my hunter saddle. Great transition or event saddle $450 located in Florida
