Another USEF Rule Question: Neoprene Lined Fly Bonnets?
Bug deterring yes, noise muffling no. I don’t clip my horse’s ears (like many, I cut the long hairs that come out of the ears, I call them the Elfin hairs). I don’ t think many dressage people clip ear hair? Horses have very keen hearing - the hair does not muffle anything, nor is it meant to.
Perhaps ‘muffling’ is too strong a term, ‘softening’ might be better. The same way haze softens the edges of things seen in the distance. I know this happens when my own hair is down, covering my ears, as opposed to when it is put up.

Oh, and another vote that neoprene fly bonnets would be uncomfortable in hot weather. They might be more comfortable in cold weather though.

You live somewhere that flies and bugs are restricted to outside?
I live in NV and show in CA. I’ve yet to experience excessive bugs when riding in an entirely closed indoor. Perhaps I’m just lucky though. Of course, being from Florida my definition of ‘excessive bugs’ might be more lax since the entire state IS bugs.

Can anyone provide the actual email to send inquiries to at USEF?

I have this fly bonnet

I used it this past weekend in the indoor arena at a recognized show. The Equidome at Westworld of Scottsdale.

When I was done with my ride, the gate person called me over and said she was of the impression that my fly bonnet was not allowed, and she would call the TDs. Not because it is too thick, but, based on it being a fly bonnet used in the indoor arena at all!

We waited for the TDs and they inspected it, and I was told it was perfectly within compliance. But then they said that they needed it removed in order to check both inside the bonnet ears and in the horse’s ears for earplugs. So we did that, and they said thanks, no worries, no earplugs, you’re good.

They did the same at a show in CA last year when my trainer rode in a CDI freestyle, I know because I was her ground helper for that class and I took it off her horse for them. They looked in the bonnet ears and in the horse’s ears, but had no issue. That was also at an indoor (Del Mar Arena).

Anyway I know anecdotes do not equal certified information, but these TDs were all fine with the bonnets being used inside. It isn’t the product material they care about at all, only whether someone is hiding earplugs. Which are definitely against the rules.

And I don’t think “neoprene lined” is an accurate description, because the ears themselves are of a neoprene type material but there is no lining. (Despite the german-based manufacturer’s description of its product as neoprene lined).

Bottom line: they’ve been allowed at the places I’ve been in the past year. Indoors, outdoors, no matter. USEF/CDI, both okay’ed. I’m sticking with it-- my mare listens to me so nicely with it on. We’ve got gnat problems here. And, more importantly it matches my boots.

Yes, I have that same ear bonnet and it definitely helps my mare stay better focused, but definitely gets way too hot in the warmer weather. I would find her ears absolutely drenched so I don’t use it anytime the weather gets much above 80. Somewhere on COTH there was someone that linked to a sheepskin-lined ear bonnet that I meant to try, but I think the retailer was in Europe. Hopefully, someone here can find it as I would think that it might be better in the heat, but again, what will the TD’s say…
