Punkin’ Pawz Palace Cat Sanctuary
February 29, (2016)

Mama Jo here,

We’ve got a serious issue going on here and we want to get the word out. 12 of our babies have been basically poisoned by Temptations cat treats. They are vomiting, and 2 of them have bloody stools. They vet said they are all in various stages of renal failure, but said thankfully because we’re so diligent in watching them, that we caught it early and they should recover, although 2 of them may develop chronic renal failure as a result. We arent out of the woods yet, but things seems to be looking up for all of them.

I’m going to post a picture of the package these treats were in.

Our vet said we arent the first to have issues with this treats, and because the FDA refuses to do anything, we wont be the last. We consider ourselves very lucky. Several cats have died as a result of the renal failure caused by these treats.

Please keep a very close eye on your furbabies if you feed them Temptations cat treats.

Wow, that’s the first I’m hearing of this! My cat has been eating them twice a day for almost 15 years without an issue. She’s always been incredibly healthy and her recent bloodwork was perfect.

That post doesn’t specify what about the treats is causing a problem.
Was it a certain batch or something?

Check the label where they are made - offshore?

Well, shit. My cats dragged out that very package from somewhere yesterday and gorged. :sigh: Thanks for posting the (very timely) warning. Will have to keep an eye on the kitties.

How do they know it was the treats that caused the issue?

Do you personally know this rescue person, TC3200? Is it a well-run rescue? Do they vet their cats before they take them in? Do they control the environment where the cats are fed and who feeds them?

I wouldn’t be inclined to trust the “testimony” of a FB poster I don’t know, especially one who runs a rescue as I don’t know anything about this particular rescue. The name “Punkin Paws Palace” doesn’t exactly inspire confidence!

I googled this issue with Temptations and couldn’t find anything current online about the treats. I read some stuff from 2013 and 2008 but not authoritative sources.

My kitties have been eating Temptations treats for years. Just a few for breakfast (maybe half a dozen each?) and occasionally a few more for snacks during the day. The package says plainly how many treats to feed at one time.

Oh, wow! I have a barn cat who feels pretty strongly that she was made to exist on the Tuna Flavor of temptations. She’s never had a problem, nor my other cats, and I’ve been feeding Temptations for years.

(Barn cat and I have a daily, sometimes tense, discussion over her choice of food. She is made to eat her cat food, but this does not stop her from shrieking at me, following me around, until she gets them.)

redalter, has your barn cat been googling for a long-lost tabby sister, by any chance?

She IS a tabby.

They meet, you know. In secret. I’m sure of it.
All of them. Somewhere.

In secret.

They have a long lost sister who is black with a few white hairs on her chest that lives at my place. OMFG, she follows me around screaming like she is tortured until I finally give in (after tripping over her several times pretending I am ignoring her) and break out either the wet cat food or the treats.

I will note that my barn cats do not eat the wet cat food, they just lick up the juice and leave the food in the bowl for me to dispose of (or the chickens steal it). It seems like a lot of work on her part to get some juice to lick up.

Those very treats are given every evening.

A warm welcome to the black and white sister! My tabby is the Queen of Underfoot! Every time I go into the kitchen and start preparing kitty food, she trips me up and then for some reason is outraged when I step on her tail.

Now she is teaching my torti-and-white to do the same thing.

Sisterkitties. What can you do?

Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em.

I have been using Temptations for many years. I shake the bag to have them all come running so I can lock them safely in the barn at night.

Some time ago one of the cats was up in the rafters of the arena. I spent 15 minutes trying to coax her down. She would try every which way but said she didn’t know how to get down.

I got the Temptation bag and shook it. She jumped onto the beam that was on an angle, slid down to the kick boards and jumped off. Took a second.

It reminded me of the actual Temptation commercial.

My cats have not had a problem with these treats.

If she gets up there again try to get a video. Maybe you could have a commercial made of it! :encouragement:

My cats have been snacking on Temptations for years with no ill results. In fact our old lady cat has recently started turning into a Halo Ad cat over them. You know the ads with the incredibly nasty kids - if you don’t have halos (little oranges) THEY don’t have halos

Wiggins come up to the chair, plunks herself down and stares with occasional miaows - NEED cookies!

No, I don’t know nor have I “vetted” the rescue. Nor do I feed this type of product to my cats. But I recalled complaints about Temptations in the past, so I just posted the info so that people who consider it relevant could pursue it farther. The melamine contamination back in 2008 or 2009 flew under everyone’s radar at first, then Internet people started talking and some paid laboratories to analyze their pets’ food and that is how the problem was first identified.

Consumeraffairs.com has several complaints.

Yessss… that scenario plays out daily. Plus mine is fairly deaf, so she feels she should scream loud enough for herself to hear, or something.

I swear my cat can hear that bag from 10 miles away!
It never fails to get her galloping straight in to the kitchen.

At this point I’m not too worried about her eating those treats.
She’d probably kill me in my sleep if I got rid of them.

I like the green ones that are “dentabites” because they helped clear up her tarter. My vet was impressed.

This. This is my life.

No way in hell could I ask my little blighters to go a single day without their Temptations. They would plot my demise with cunning and venom.

I’ve been feeding these treats for decades. The current clowder of three rescues are 15 and 8 years old and they get them daily. My prior purrfect kitty lived to the grand age of 23 eating Temptations every day (even when she no longer had any teeth).

My two younger ones are littermates that actually look a lot like the cat in the commercials, and they act like him too. God forbid I leave the package on the counter unattended for 15 seconds. They’ll steal it and rampage through the house like a herd of tiny, crazed elephants till they can tear it open and eat the whole thing in a sitting. Usually someplace I can’t get at them to take their prize back.
