Another Way to buy itty bitty shares in a horse!

Is it really as easy as a one-time payment to own an itty bitty share? I looked into it a few weeks ago and saw they were going to offer shares of a really good-looking Flatter colt. The draw for me would be to having a horse to get excited about during races. I’m definitely a casual fan, and pick horses to cheer on pretty arbitrarily, but am too risk averse to gamble. I feel like it would be worth $58 to have someone to closely follow, never expecting to make a dime of it back.

Yup, it’s really that easy through MRH.

And they are surprisingly good at paying out returns after races. I mean, you’re unlikely to profit or recoup your initial fee, but in general if the horse hits the board, you will get a little bit of money back. I’m talking dollars and cents, but that’s more than the herd of freeloaders in my pasture has earned me lately!

They are good about communication. They create FB communities so you can interact with other owners. They do a lot of YouTube broadcasts (I don’t find those particularly interesting if you understand the sport even in the slightest). Once covid is behind us, they will get back to doing events in person at the track.

All of this is exactly the type of access and positive PR that benefits everyone.

I like him too

FWIW, for your own peace of mind, read all the information about the horse. Some, like the Kantharos colt, also include a stallion bonus, but not all colts do. Also pay attention to make sure you know if the micro-share is a sale, such as the Flatter colt, or a lease share (such as Monomoy Girl or Got Stormy… you ‘own’ your micro-shares in these mares’ through the end of 2021 but you also get a micro-percentage of their winnings, I think I got $6 as my part of Monomoy Girl’s 2nd place finish behind Letruska :tada: )

Read all the way down through the Notices and filings. I don’t think you need to do this for every horse but IMO the first horse so you know what you are getting in to. You can see where the price per share is going. You can see the financial details.

These micro-shares are reviewed and approved by the SEC before they go on sale. I’ve talked to MRH a few times in the last few weeks about something else. This first round of filings (Monomoy Girl and Got Stormy) took longer to approve than usual due to a new administration. The expectation is filings going forward will be a bit smoother as the overall paperwork process has been done.

A few other ‘tips’ from a relatively new MRH owner. Current owners are offered opportunities before they are offered to the public. Two things… when you see a horse you like, immediately indicate interest; the earlier you do that, the earlier your ‘Early Access’ window is (just because you Indicated Interest doesn’t mean you need to actually buy when the time comes). You might want to also snap up a horse at a price you are comfortable with to get you in to the ‘owner’ category.

I first got in last September. The horses I liked from Fasig-Tipton September were all sold out by the time it was my turn to buy :frowning: . Fourteen horses from Keeneland September were available, all individual or a package ‘bundle’ called Future Stars. I bought a few individual of the ones I liked and then went for the Future Stars (yes, I own a smaller percentage than with the individuals). All winter MRH has posted updates (videos and photos) when the horses went to the KY training centers then, depending on the horse, down to FL and even travel information on the few that were destined for So Cal based trainers.

Am I coming out with positive cash flow… nah. Am I having fun with this negative cash flow, yup!

I like the Flatter colt too as well as the Dialed In colt. Thoughts on that fellow? According to the site he’s getting some time to grow up a little.

This would be a really neat present for a horse crazy kid. My eight-year-old self would have been over the moon!

Like a 6$ share to Gamestop!
Something to keep up with and learn about. (not expecting the windfall though)

All I gotta say… maybe a dumb scam to buy in but for me, today, watching ‘my’ 15/1 mare, Social Dilemma, in Race 6, an allowance race, loose the race by a nose after a great stretch run…

I’ll take it any day :tada:

Whoot - a whole $16.05 for today’s second place.

I don’t know what the payouts from her earlier races this year will end up being.

Has Social Dilemma paid for herself financially. No. Did she put a smile on my face today? Yes

I didn’t realize how inexpensive the shares are. I think I may soon become a .01% owner of a racehorse! LOL! Just a fun thing to do, I have definitely spent more money on sillier things.

I have only been to the track once. I am always terrified that I will see a breakdown. I saw Ruffian breakdown on television and I saw Eight Bell’s breakdown on television. And Go For Wand. I’ve really never gotten past it.

I went to the Preakness the year Nyquist was doing well. A horse broke down before we got there and apparently one after but I didn’t stay long enough to see those.

Having said all that, the idea of having an itty-bitty share of a racehorse does sound like fun. I may have to look into this!

When I was younger I dreamed of one day owning a racehorse and when I was a little older I would have loved an opportunity to buy even a tiny share in one. I hope other people will feel the same way and be in a position to do something about it.
I don’t see horse racing dying a sudden death in this century for lack of fans. Horse racing has been around for centuries, maybe even millennia. True, in the last century this country lost several good racetracks and that is tragic. But I don’t see racing dying in England or Ireland – not if the fans are actually allowed to attend race meetings and be there in person to party and cheer on their favourites.
And I don’t see racing dying in America either. Not on local dirt tracks or open courses, not as long as humans own horses and are obsessed with speed. Maybe, instead, it will come back into the reach of the everyday horse owner, who owns an everyday horse and wants to match it against a neighbor’s everyday horse.
Racing doesn’t have to be the big business it became in the last century.

Just bought myself some shares on a few of the current offerings.
Super excited to be able to follow “my” horse :clap:

If one of them happens to not pan out… no biggie. I’ve spent more than this during one night at the casino :joy::joy::joy:

Oh, is that why it’s said “coming soon” for so long? I’ve actually been checking everyday, and officially signed up and ready to buy. I’m not counting on getting a share of one of the new ones, but hopefully soon!

It sounds like there’s a whole herd of us interested in getting in the game! What a cool turn in the world of horse racing.

From what I understand, the SEC approval process ‘slowed down’ with the change in administration. Now the first offerings under the new administration have been approved, subsequent offerings should not have the same wait time.

Went to buy in on two today and ended up with three :stuck_out_tongue:

If you click “interested” on the new offerings that interest you, you’ll get early access to purchase shares, before they go public.

Darn it, I’d seen that button the day before I decided to take the plunge, but the “interested” button was gone the day I registered, so is it possible I just missed it? I saw a bunch of new horses moved to “early access” today. I’ll keep my eye on the site!

Is it wrong to buy a very small percentage of a horse because they look like the type of sport horse you’d buy for yourself? Because there’s a Tapit colt screaming my name. And that colt from England is just lovely.

I emailed them and they said they did remove the “indicate interest” button on certain horses due to the number of shareholders that indicated interest based on the number of shares they have available. It sounded like they will still be available, just not via early access.

It also sounds like you and I have the same taste in horses.

I just bought 2 shares of the Dialed In colt and one share of the Flatter colt!!!

I have always wanted to own a racehorse.

one of the Derby horses cost a thousand bucks at the sale…Just sayin’

Carrothers is now in my stable  He was a private sale (I watch the yearling and 2YO sales to see what MRH buys  ) Gives me a chance to research before they become available.

As for what you buy… your reason is no better or no worse than the rest of us. I have no expectation of making the share price back (could it happen, yeah; will it? not likely). So buy for fun for whatever reasons float your boat

I consider it like a movie ticket. I won’t see the money again, but hopefully enjoy the show.
