Antares Bridle Woes

So around 2 years ago in Wellington I bought myself a very expensive but lovely Antares bridle. It was kind of special as they gave me a different nose and brow band than it regularly comes with. But after about 6 months I noticed the buckles on the cheeks and noseband had begun to show spots/stains like the way brass does however these are silver and Antares claims they are aluminum alloy.

Within another 6 months the spots would regularly turn green and under where the parts of the bridle were fastened together it would often have rust. The bridle is used daily but its also been cleaned daily or atleast wiped down. It has maybe been rained on while riding less than 5 times ever.
I tried to take it to Antares last year at the show but Covid-19 happened and we all packed up and headed home. I had told them about it prior and they did say it was very unusual.

The problem continues to get worse until this weekend when both the noseband buckles broke. The pins snapped right off as I was cleaning it at the show. I reached out again showing picture of the broken buckles also showing that the rest of the bridle is immaculate it looks quite new still. I was told it was probably my tack cleaner or my fly spray BUT I use Antares products and don’t flyspray my horses face?

I was contacted by a representative saying that the only thing they could do was offer my 15% off a new bridle. I just want a new set of buckles the bridle is perfect otherwise and if i bought another bridle what if this happened again? no thank you Antares. They have also discontinued the noseband so i cannot just buy the noseband. I will aslo add my “throw away” bridles from the bargain bin do not have this absurd issue.

has anyone had this experience trying to work with Antares? Does anyone know of good tack repair places I can ship this bridle to have all the buckles replaced? Does anyone have a bridle reccomendation in dark brown, pull back noseband no flash, with a wave brow band?

Is it one of the Origin style bridles similar to this one? The buckles certainly are unique. Or another style?

We have a Warmblood size Origin bridle with regular horse length reins. I haven’t noticed any issue with the buckles, although it was only used for a couple of shows; so is still almost new. The only issue was the tight 2nd keeper for the noseband; which would work its way off the noseband strap, as the horse moved.

The leather is so buttery soft. Wish I had purchased more bridles. Maybe a couple of martingales too.

I’m sorry you are having problems with the Antares buckles rusting and ultimately failing. That’s just so unsafe!!

Perhaps contact Smart Pak and ask if they might be able to get replacement hardware from Antares? For the prices, the Antares bridles should last for years. Hope you get a resolution.

Sorry this has happened. I have the same style as above, and it is hands down my favourite bridle. No issues with the metal at all.

I’m wondering if it is a reaction to something that came in contact with the metal? Where is it regularly stored?

If you don’t have a local tack repair place, you might check with Tenney’s Custom Saddlery in Florida. I have several pieces from them that are gorgeous. I’d bet she can replace the buckles and make it good as new.

My Antares bridle was gorgeous, and I loved the hardware on it, never had any problem with it. It looked just like that Origin bridle in the video. In fact, I still have an Antares martingale sitting in the basement for several years unused and it looks just fine. It does sound as if it came into contact with something that might have caused your issue.

I always had wonderful customer service from Brad at Antares but he probably isn’t there any more. I bought several bridles from him years ago.

I bet you could just send it to a good repair person and have the buckles replaced. I use John at Saddlewerks, Inc. He does great work. Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies.

The leather is still superb and in wonderful condition. its been stored in the A/C tack room on its hook the same as everyone elses! if i had left it somewhere funny like in a musty trailer or outdoors I would undertsand. There is also and even older Antares bridle in the barn thats been sitting in a tack box. Buckles are totally fine (leather is worse for wear but its sitting dirty in a box)

Its partially the origin and partially a precision bridle bought directly from Antares at Wellington so no smartpak help. =[

I’m definitely not doing business with them again and I took it to Hadfields to see if they had a noseband and the rep there was appalled that it could happen. He didn’t have anything but was nice enough to help me and then sent me to Castelow master saddler. He too was appalled and after much dicussing of “the damn french want to make everything so overly complicated” we found 3 different sized buckles to fit the assorted straps and will all be replaced.

I have many Antares bridles of different ages, no issues with any buckles but the keepers are awful, especially on the throat latches.

i just bought an Antares saddle and spoke with a Brad several times on the phone or through email, and he was wonderful, so i would wager a guess that he is one and the same.

Sounds as though it could be the same guy, I believe his full name was Brad Van Kirk. Glad you had such a good experience.

Also have spoken with the said Brad in the past month or so (December 2020).
