Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

Anyone out there had this surgery?

And if you did, was the bone harvested from the iliac crest or was BMP2 and a collagen sponge used?

I’m referring to Anterior surgery; no pedicle screws used. Just a cage, bone and/or BMP2 and the collagen sponge.

Thanks so much.

I had posterior fusion twice - the first time they took bone from the iliac crest. My back was healed well before the area where they harvested the bone stopped hurting.

The second time they used a block of cadaver bone. Much quicker recovery.

My specialist wanted me to have an ALIF. I weighed up the pros and cons and decided against it. I figured it would be super difficult to undo anything that went wrong. I have since discovered Pilates. Swear by Pilates.

Mine did use screws (anterior and posterior, double the scars, double the fun!), so not the same, but mine did use illiac harvested bone and while it was painful when I woke up, it wasn’t lingering or horrific.

I am not sure about all your terms, but the bone that they used in my gage was from the back half of the vertebrae they cut away to make room for my compression
