I recently bought my horse the Honeycomb Plaid Chill Chaser from Dover Saddlery. It’s a cooler, but also says it’s an anti sweat sheet and is an all season use. So can i use it on a horse in the summer/spring? When would i “need” to?
Why do you want to use it?
A cooler is for cooling off a hot and sweaty horse after exercise.
I looked up anti sweat sheet and basically it’s just a cooler.
If your horse is hot, wet, or bathed, and the day is cool, you would use a cooler to wick away moisture. But in hot summer, no, you bathe scrape and airdry to cool down.
Typically I use something like that after a bath/ rain, or in the trailer on a dry, clipped horse, when temps are roughly in the 45-60 range (depends a bit too on if it’s damp/ raw/ windy etc.) If it’s colder you need something heavier and if it’s warmer you probably don’t need anything. They also work well as an underlayer under a fleece or wool cooler, since the moisture ends up being wicked away from the horse.
I used to use either an Irish knit sheet or a drying sheet made from thin coolmax in the summer to keep the horse clean after a bath but allow for drying and some
bug protection. A scrim would also work. Depends on if you need surcingles etc.
The Dover sheet is light but it would not be my first choice in summer unless your summer temps are pretty mild.
Wilsun made the best coolmax sheet. The company is back in business but I’m not sure if they still do this one.
