Does anybody have an idea how I could get Azethrometine to be more palatable for my old cat?
the cat is around 15 years old and developed some gum issues that resulted in a couple of pulled teeth. Initially she took the medicine well (different meds though) but she still had swelling in her face. The vet prescribed a different antibiotic and from dose 1 she fought me. Now I wrap her up in a blanket to keep from getting shredded and give her a Delectable treat after.
Today I poked her in the mouth somewhere and she bled a little. She did accept the treat and went on to clean her food bowl. Tuna water/oil, something?
Not oil but tuna juice from can product. * drain the juice off a can of tuna packed in water
Clam juice - all natural juice comes in 8oz bottles - usually works for awhile
But don’t spill it - as I remember it STINKS !
Good Luck ~ always a challenge medicating cats ~ hope she’s feeling better soon ~
thank you. Yes, it has a STRONG smell!
Is she amenable to pills if they’re in a treat or pill pocket? If so, you could get some of those clear gelatin capsules at any pharmacy and put it in one of those, then put that in something for her to eat.
Ask your vet if FortiFlora is ok for her. Assuming so, ask if you can buy a couple of packets from them start. If she likes a pill pocket, have her eat one of those plain first, then roll a piece in the fortiflora, THEN add the pill to the pill pocket and roll that in the FF. FF has a strong liver smell that’s like crack to most kitties.
Or, pieces of chicken, or cheese, or hot dog, or anything you can squish around a pill or squish a pill into, coated with FF
the dose is 1ml once a day. The supplied surringes are tiny and flimsy. Somewhere I think I have the pipette from the other medication laying around, unfortunately I am a little chaotic atm, I am not 100% sure I did not toss it in the attempt to get my house sorted. I will see if they have that stuff. I never had success with pill pockets though. Not even with my dogs.
Thank you all for the suggestions. We still have a longway to go. I felt so miserable last night when I drew blood.
oh, it’s a liquid
Get some kitty “churro” sticks which are actually a thick liquid. We have Temptations Purrrre, which is also kitty crack around here. Maybe you could intersperse the 1ml while slowly squeezing out some of the puree
Do you mean “azithromycin”? And how long does your cat have to take it?
Earlier this summer one of my cats had cytauxzoonosis (aka “bobcat fever”) and he was on azithromycin once a day and atovaquone 3 times a day for 10 days, and believe me that’s a nasty combination. He fought me, but he had to either swallow it or die because that disease is nothing to mess around with. I wrapped him in a towel, inserted the syringe in the back corner of his lips, and squirted it as far back in his mouth as I could. For the first 4-5 days I also fed him by syringe because he wasn’t eating. By day 10 he had pretty much gotten used to it and I was much more proficient at administering it.
I don’t think there’s anything you can do to make it taste any better. Just keep telling yourself and your cat that this won’t last forever. It’s just one of those things you have to do to help your cat.
And here’s a tip I got from a vet–immediately after giving the medicine, blow on the cat’s nose. This will startle her and make her swallow.
I’ve done that and it’s a bit hit and miss - one kitty always swallowed, the others just looked pissed LOL
Another trick is touch a wet finger to the tip of their nose
I generally stoke the throat downward. So far I confused her with a couple of troppers full of tuna water intermittenly. After she laps her delectable up.
yay!!
Do cat’s like sweet stuff? I can get sweet flavored, liquid antibiotics from my local, mom and pop pharmacy. My toddler gives me no issues and asked for more when he needs them.
this is some strong stuff, not the run-of-the-mill Amoxicillin. I wish it came in a good flavor. Not sure if this one likes sweet stuff. PB would be an option I suppose, but that isn’t offered either.
Update:
I am calling it.
She has not been eating well, not even her favorite can tempt her now.
This morning I called the vet, we are going Friday morning. She was a good cat, gave me many laughs over the years.
((Hugs)) ~ wrap her up in home love & cherish the time you two have left ~
You two were lucky to share your lives for so many years ~
