I noticed this on my mare the other day. I THINK it’s scratches, but I’ve never actually dealt with scratches before so I’m not sure. She’s not a big fan of me picking at it but doesn’t seem painful otherwise. It honestly just looks like dirt stuck to her, but it doesn’t flake off. I applied some Corona multi-purpose ointment. Any other tips or better course of action to take?
It cam be from insect bites, which is common with white heels and long grass.
Mix vaseline with yellow sulphur and apply.
Yep, that’s scratches.
Definitely scratches. I’ve tried so many different products and mixtures of products and for my gelding and the thing that works best on him is the Equiderma lotion. Clears them right up, you may have some trial and error to find out what works best for your mare.
Scratches.
Use either Equiderma or Microtek. I’ve even used Banixx and it worked pretty well. Ideally spray AM and PM, let sit for a bit and then towel dry. Keep that towel away from your other grooming tools, and disinfect any grooming tool you have used on her legs.
Don’t pick at the cuts, as much as you want to. It can sometimes trigger cellulitis.
Once it is resolved, prevention is usually currying that area and/or keeping that area dry. Scratches can develop for any number of reasons, but usually develop if the horse’s legs are constantly wet and not dried off (from bathing, hosing, sweating, walking through grass in pasture, etc). A curry a day, lifting up the hair and letting it dry, will keep scratches at bay in most climates.
Muck Itch is another good product. https://www.amazon.com/Muck-Itch-Muck-Itch-Spray-32/dp/B00562SE5U
