Any CotHers use ArenaKleen for dust control?

With the drought-like conditions currently happening in Maryland, I am once again researching dust control solutions for my outdoor arena. One of the products I came across was ArenaKleen:

Has anyone on the board used this?

If yes, what is your experience with it (good, bad, or ugly)?

Just wondered if you had gone ahead with this product? I would love to hear if you like it.

I did go ahead with it … and LOVE it !! I can ride in the arena with zero / 0 / no dust, AT ALL. No dust on my boots when I long-line, no dust on the horse’s legs, no dust in the air, no dust when I drag.

The installation was easy and it has worked into the footing beautifully. If you did not know it was treated, you would not be able to tell by looking or feeling the footing … not greasy or oily. The estimate is that it will last me two years before I need to re-apply some, but that the second treatment will be with a smaller amount. And having watched how it was done, I believe I can do it myself in the future – just need to buy a sprayer unit of some type.

Yes, it was pricey ($4,500 to deliver, install, and grade a 60x20 meter arena), but my contact lenses and lungs say it was worth it. And the company was a delight to deal with … we traded lots of emails getting questions answered, footing analyzed, etc. They were prompt and supportive without being pushy.

Dragging up this old post because I’m considering getting ArenaKleen in my ongoing efforts to find an easy way to manage arena dust. My question is, I’m in Michigan, and get get a ton of rain in the spring & snow in the winter. The weather is predictably unpredictable. Will this additive just wash out?

No, it does not wash out. It coats each particle of dust and stays there. I’m now 9 years into using ArenaKleen. The first application was in 2010, with a top-off a few years later. I might do a 3rd top-off this year - I’ll make that decision in the Jun-Jul timeframe.

The stuff really does work - it does not make the footing oily or slippery, it does not change the color or consistency. It just stops the dust from floating up, even when mares have a fit of this sillies and are bucking and kicking on the lunge line.

You are the BEST! Thank you!

ShotenStar, what is it made out of? I looked on the web site and could not find what it actually is. Could you illuminate?

According to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) I got from the company, it is a:

Proprietary synthetic blend of extremely purified severely hydrotreated branched alkanes and alkylated organic compounds

If you are seriously interested, I recommend calling / emailing the company - I found them them very helpful and patient about answering all my questions.

Does ArenaKleen change the stability of sand by compacting the footing as if it has just been watered? My sand arena rides best when wet. If it gets too dry, the sand has too much shear (movement).

As I replied in a related thread, ArenaKleen does not change the performance of the surface, other than to reduce the fine particles (dust) becoming airborne. My stonedust arena turns into oatmeal after a heavy rain – it did before ArenaKleen and still does after. If you have footing performance issues, I would recommend correcting those before applying ArenaKleen or any similar dust control product.
