any decent western barns in Northern VA that do cow work?

Well my honey is finally returning from deployment and we will be returning to NoVA soon. I am very excited. I have to find a good place to keep working cattle with my mare though! I can trailer in… but just wanted to know is there anybody doing any sorting/penning in Northern VA?

I don’t know off hand though the team penning association does show Virginia in Region 8. When I lived there, Helen Groves (of the King Ranch) had a place in Middlebrook VA and cuttings benefited from her presence. You might want to look for contacts through NCHA, ranch sorting and team penning associations, and such.

Try getting in touch with the person who organized the Martin Black clinic last spring. They had cow work in the morning and there were definitely some experienced local folks there (at Frying Pan Park in Herndon).

Here’s the thread:

If you need more help, PM me. I have a couple of other contacts that might help.

Miran Farm has a western program with heeling, herding and roping clinics and lessons. They are in Aldie, just outside of Leesburg.

Do they do penning/sorting? I know where that farm is.

I don’t know, they used to do an every Friday night thing but it does not look to be on the schedule. Call them! If they don’t I am sure they will know someone who does locally.

will do thank you

D&M Cattle Co. in Nokesville hosted the Wounded Warrior Cutting Horse Classic in the past.

I’m not sure if they still do or how active it is. I ride across the street; it’s been pretty quiet on the days I’ve been out there.

Someone should start up some sorting competitions, it is so fun and anybody can do it… any level any age.

Its super fun!
