any experience with inflamed coronary bands?

My horse has both hind coronary bands inflamed with mushy, soft heels that are sensitive. He looks ouchy behind when on the lounge line. I tried keeping him up especially when it is wet or the dew is on the grass and he looked a little bit better, I’m thinking some kind of allergic reaction to weeds when it is wet??

He is not on any kind of mud or wet conditions when turned out. Just normal grass pasture.

I had a horse here once that actually had some slight bleeding on the coronary bands. The field wasn’t muddy but it was a wet year. It seemed to clear up without any treatment and the horse was not lame.

Yes. Without trying to be alarmist, my horse presented like this and was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease, coronary band dysplasia (rare autoimmune disorder that attacks only coronary band and affects hoof production). I would encourage you to ask your vet to take a punch biopsy, if you are willing to go that route for diagnosis.

If they are not red or bleeding, but just super puffy and spongy feeling, I’m thinking off the top of my head that they are just waterlogged. Mine have been this way during especially wet summers.
