Would like to know if anyone is using either or both of these single ingredient supplements added to the diet for continued antioxident support for some lingering inflammation. I have a multiple - issue horse, unfortunatley. ( post Lyme, PSSM 1 , possible shivers)
Just interested if these single ingredient items made a difference to anyone with all the other basics covered ( natural vit E, magnesium, balancer, exercise, etc) I see them listed in quite a few supplements now, but would like to only add things seperately ( if at all).
I don’t know, but I just ordered some for myself after doing some research for hot flashes. There are some good studies on it. I agree with you on the concept of using one ingredient to see what works so you have a clue.
I used it for a while after I bought an ex-lesson horse that clearly needed all the help he could get. He had some kind of inflammation in his airways left over from some random virus. Used it for around 6 months and the inflammation went away and never had any issues. I do think it helped, because he had been on meds out the wazzo and wasn’t making progress until I added Grape seed extract and chia seeds. Went back to full work with no breathing issues.
What type of inflammation? What are the symptoms you wish to alleviate?
There is a new study I read that excessive doses of Vitamin E can lead to inflammation when the excess Vit. E oxidizes.
PSSM horses are normally on very high fat diets, and some fats [Omega 6] can also cause inflammation. Sunflower, Corn, Soybean oils are very high in Omega-6.
Be sure your horse’s diet is not the cause of the inflammation you seek to treat.
I think many of the supplement manufacturers mix ingredients more for the appeal to the humans than the effect on the horses.
Can you find reasonably priced pure grape seed extract… with guaranteed levels of Resveratrol?
PSA…Dogs should never be given grapes, raisins, or grape seed extract. Never!
yes, I have researched so much for this horse over the past 2 yrs when I come across a supplement I think " I should be on this too!" I have actually added magnesium malate to my diet and it has helped me sleep through the night!! I have ordered some reservatrol from Pure Bulk and thought I would try it myself…
CSasper58 - My horse is on a hight fat diet for sure, canola oil and flax being the fat sources. Interesting about the vit E… everything I read still recommends high doses ( and my vets agree…)
and regarding levels of reservatrol in GSE : In my readings, reservatrol and grape seed extract are both antioxidants, but grape seed extract is not the source of reservatrol.which is made from the skin of grapes…
I am trying to learn as much as possible about both substances - for my human and hooved family!!
It has been a long year of literally bringing this horse back from the dead, and we have made amazing progress.
Our arsenal includes accupuncture, chiro, message, increased exercise
…and whispering in his huge ears ( 4 yr old, 18 h Shire cross:) )
I will continue to explore anything that could possibly bring him to 100%
What exactly is grape seed extract supposed to do? Is there a difference between grape seed extract and reservatrol??
I have had my insulin resistant resistant horse on EquiThrive Joint. https://equithrive.com/products/equithrive-joint?utm_source=GoogleAdWords&utm_medium=PaidSearch&utm_campaign=autoship2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuP7ig7TV1QIV2A2BCh3qAwj5EAAYAyAAEgJK-PD_BwE&variant=27481100681
the main ingredient is resveratrol.
This is horse deals with old founder, torn tendons from his first rehab farrier, a hyperextended tendon on the left rear and a lot of arthritis from a fractured sacrum. He walks a fine line to stay healthy.
the EquiThrive seems to help but this horse will never be rideable for anything but a few trips around the round pen. The few times he does gallop at liberty gives me heart failure.
Because he also deals with insulin resistance, I will keep him on the EquiThrive. It is pricey ---- a 2# tub lasts ~60 days and costs $99 directly from the company.
Along with his traditional vet, He sees a holistic DVM/chiropractor monthly; she also is trained in acupuncture.
If you care to spend $1.65/day, I would recommend trying it. I have not seen any negative effects with my horse.
I hope this helps and best of luck:)
Thanks, Walkin … That was one of the products that caught my eye.
TWH Girl - reservatrol and grape seed extract seem to be growing in popularity as antioxidents in human and animal supplements.
In my Lyme protocol research, Japanese knotweed is used herbally, and it is a source of reservatrol, so that is what started me on this connection
