Any info on CHSA stallions Roman Quest and Cozy's Commander

Just wondering what people’s experiences/thoughts are on these stallions and their bloodlines. I understand that they are older (Cozy’s passed away, not sure about Roman Quest??)
I have 3 horses here that have Roman Quest as their grand-sire on their sire’s side and the one has Cozy’s Commander as her great-grand sire through her dam’s bloodlines.

I’ve found some articles about Cozy online, not much on Roman…

So I thought I’d pick some of your brains.

I know there are people on here who’ve been breeding sport horses for years and may have some info on them.

Certain character traits, conformation traits, successes, etc.

I find it fascinating looking into the family history of my horses.

Names “from the past” for sure …

Cozy Commanders could jump the proverbial moon, and were user friendly to deal with. Just very easy, very talented individuals

I taught a couple of Roman Quests years ago and they didnt have quite the scope and ability of the CC’s, but they were again really easy going, nice jumpers (many ended up as eventers, field hunters, dressage, hunters with their Ammy owners) and their owners adored them. They were the types of horses you could leave sitting for a month or more, climb back on and go to a hunt and they didnt miss a beat

Both lovely stallions that produced very nice offspring

With both stallions in the pedigrees of your horses, you should have some very pleasant and talented individuals on your hands

The Cozy Commander sire line is still alive and has been producing some very nice event horses. He was certainly a very, very good event sire with world class offspring. But they were not easy rides.

Was Roman Quest a pure TB? I know CC wasn’t.

Roman Quest was full TB

and from what I can remember, CC was 7/8 or 15/16ths or something like that

I’ll see if I can find his bloodlines - he isnt coming up on the allbreed site

Doug Dean owned Cozy Commander for many years. He could be contacted in Priceville for more information.

I was able to find Cozy’s pedigree

http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/cozys+commander

The ones I have with Roman Quest do very much fit into the ‘good temperament, easy to work with’ category.
The mare that has Cozy in her background is very athletic, I have been told by some that the Cozy’s were/are good to deal with but have also heard that they can have ‘opinions’…

I remember the names Old Pioneer and Ayr (in CC’s pedigree) very well.
They were both very popular stallions for sport horses/field hunters.
One of the first horses I rode, a beautiful grey was named Sylvan Ayr, by Ayr.
I thought she was the most beautiful horse in the world.

Any guesses to what the “Canadian Sport” breed was for Cozy Commander’s dam line? I’m curious as to what would have been a popular cross back in the '70’s. Quarter horse? Morgan? bit of draft?

I believe I heard draft in CC, but cannot remember where or why. He’s got a current stallion son named Cozymyn who is the sire of a COTHer’s event horse. PM Pegasus Mom if you want to find out what she knows.

I picked up a Canadian Hunter Stud Book while at a used book store (it was the predecessor to the Sport Horse Association).

It lists Sunday Morning as a grey mare foaled April 13, 1966, bred by Alvin Thompson, Kincardine, Ont

Sire is listed as the TB Ayr, dam listed as Bell - foundation stock, but no pedigree.

K2 is this a red bound small book by chance? I remember there were 2 volumes containing the Canadian Hunter pedigree’s going back to the 1920’s. I would LOVE to get my hands on those books now…

Yup, there was only the one volume, and for some reason I was compelled to buy it  It was published in 1969.

The record keeping is so important (although the CLRC online database isn’t bad). However I was looking a while back for a published list of Governor General’s and Lieutenant Governors Cup Champions and Reserves back 20 years or so to look up a horse in our barn…we don’t seem to promote our best Canadianbreds very well…

Hmmm…there was an old guy around this area (I’m not too far from Kincardine) named Joe Thompson (I’m sure he passed away quite a few years ago). Anyways I’m pretty sure he had a Saddlebred stallion.
Perhaps he was a relation to Alvin?? In this area it often seemed that relatives had the same breed(s) of horses. (For instance a family may be into Clydesdales, Percherons, etc) Maybe this Bell mare was of Saddlebred breeding??

I had always thought that CC had some Clyde blood, but I am not sure.
The best thing to do would be to ask Doug Dean personally. I’ll give him a call.

Back in the day it was popular to breed ‘Commercials’ - beautiful light draft horses which were the result of Clyde/Hackney Horse crosses, to TB stallions. This often produced very nice individuals. They would then breed those horses back to more TB stallions in each generation for high quality 3/4/ 7/8, 15/16 TB hunter type horses, with size and substance as well as jumping ability.

I have a mare that has Cozy commander as her grand sire on her dam side.
I actually bought her from Doug Dean about 3 years ago. She is 17.2 h and is very athletic. She can definitely jump. She is also opinionated and not the easiest ride. She is great for my daughter but is definitely a one person horse.

I believe Cozymyn has shire in him. I was also looking at one of his babies first and Doug told me that she was about 1/5 shire.

Dare1, I have your mare’s uncle. She sounds a bit like my Bob, but he is 16.2. He was by CC, and his dam was a mare bred for mounted police work - she was Perch, TB, Arab. Do you still have your mare? How is she doing? I just got Bob in February, and he is great. We’ve done a little of everything from hunting to dressage. I am still figuring out what I would like to do with him. I don’t have a specific agenda except both of us having a good time. I haven’t tried him over any bigger jumps yet. He needed a bit of retraining when I got him. I am starting to set my eye on figuring that part out, because I wouldn’t mind showing him.
